 The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced how curriculums designed for online and low-residency courses have a particular set of needs differing from those of traditional face-to-face courses. This panel seeks submissions that address how educators approached their own shifts to being suddenly remote, and what changes need to take place institutionally and pedagogically in light of what we’ve uncovered about ourselves as a society. 

The conference is through the Northeast Modern Language Association and will take place March 11-14th, 2021 in Philadelphia, PA

The proposed interdisciplinary panel examines the rich relationship of music and the literary works within various European literatures focusing primarily on the period from mid-nineteenth to the twentieth century, but presentations within a broader time frame will also be considered. We invite a wide range of papers investigating the author’s technique of representing music in literature, examining aesthetic, historical and cultural interactions between music and literature, audience and performers, as well as the relationship between the author and the composer, in real or fictional form.

Now the press is seeking contributions for a new volume to explore both the teaching of Atwood’s publications since that time and 21st-century approaches to her earlier works, such as strategies for teaching The Handmaid’s Tale that draw on the Hulu TV series, the graphic novel, and/or The Testaments.

When Germans and Americans move back and forth between the continents, they participate in an important cross pollination influencing both the intellectual and artistic worlds of both cultures. Whether they came with the waves of people that journeyed westward in the wake of the German Revolution of 1848, or because of wars and economic needs, or from diaspora across Europe they brought new ideas and artistry to America. During the maturation, commercial expansion and the technological explosion of the new world in the twentieth century, programs fostering education like the Fulbright exchange, sent millions of Americans back to Germany to study, teach, report, work and to live permanently.

With internationalization of higher education and recent student demographics changes, multilingual students are no longer “contained” in ESL programs (Matsuda, 2006; Poe & Zhang-Wu, forthcoming). Many of multilingual students matriculate directly into mainstream writing classes, highlighting the importance of linguistically responsive instruction at the tertiary level (Gallagher & Haan, 2018). This awareness is especially crucial for faculty in college writing programs because of their vast reach of instructional impact. Despite this need, college writing faculty often have limited training in supporting multilingual students (Atkinson et al., 2015; CCCC Statement on Second Language Writing and Writers, 2014).
