       Beckett Studies has changed radically since Richard Gilman claimed that Beckett's imagination worked "almost entirely outside history". In recent years, much work has been done to recover the relevant social and cultural contexts for Beckett's work, and this process has been greatly expedited by continuing efforts to disseminate the contents of the many drafts and manuscripts housed in the archives.

CFP: Travel and Tourism (6/15/06; MAPACA; 10/27-29/06)

The Mid-Atlantic Popular / American Culture Association (MAPACA) will
be holding its 17th Annual Conference in Philadelphia from October 26
to the 29th. This is a wide-ranging conference that usually features
over 90 panels and 270 presenters. For full information about the

The conference features roughly 35 "areas," ranging from Architecture
to Television, from Shakespeare to Cartoons. We usually run 3 or 4
panels in the "Travel and Tourism" area, and I invite you to submit a
proposal.

CFP: Cauda Pavonis: Studies in Hermeticism seeks scholarly articles
for presentation at a special session of the 2007 Renaissance Society
of America Conference, "Applications of Hermetic and Alchemical
Studies." We seek papers from all disciplines that address any
aspect of hermeticism, including scholarship treating its traditional
manifestations in alchemy, arithmetics, astrology, music, and sacred
geometry. Interdisciplinary work involving fields such as art
history, history of ideas and history of science, literature, music,
philosophy, religious studies, and others is particularly welcome.

AREA: African American Documentary

The relationship of racialized communities to the cinema has been a
contentious one - in all realms, including the non-fiction film. From
early ethnographic films to more recent representations, constructions of
African Americans in documentary have remained problematic - not only in
terms of depictions, but access to production, distribution, and exhibition.

CALL FOR PAPERS for The Third Annual Shaw Symposium at the Shaw
Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, August 18-20, 2006.

PROPOSALS for papers and panel topics (focused as much as possible on
Too True To Be Good and Arms and The Man, the two Shaw plays being
produced at the Shaw Festival, and confined to twenty minutes in

Submissions are solicited on the theme of Choice and Suffering for the third
issue of Static, the online journal of the London Consortium (publication
date: end June 2006).

The concept of choice is highly valued, especially in the West, as a
fundamental right of free individuals. Our sense of being free is often
based on our freedom to exercise choice in the marketplace, in matrimony, in
the voting booth, or in the hypertext link. But choice has its darker side:
it can prove to be illusory; sometimes the process of choosing can be
agonising; making a choice can close off future choices; we are frequently
forced to make choices.

This panel seeks to complicate these assumptions by considering the role that visual reproductions and verbal descriptions of art have played in shaping the conception of what we have come to know as modernism.

The Nellie Tree: Reflections on the Life of Nellie Y. McKay

Recently, one of the central figures in African-American and Black Women¹s
literary studies, Nellie Y. McKay, passed away. Over the course of her
nearly forty years as an academic, she was one of the premier champions of
African-American literature, particularly the role of its women, as part of
the American canon.
