The Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society, an organization of 200+ members worldwide, invites paper proposals on topics related to Rawlings’ life and works. Papers should be 20-30 minutes.

Topics related to rawlings may include:

This roundtable will examine Asian American representation in 21st-century television and film, to engage in conversation on if or how films or TV shows that feature or foreground Asian American characters have realized the aspiration of a more authentic, nuanced, and diverse representation.

Weather in 19th-century Literature and Art in the Age of the Anthropocene concerns the question of evidence of weather-related changes due to anthropogenic emissions induced, in part, by industrial capitalism. While humanity has been considered to be largely responsible for weather-related changes regarding shifts in wind current patterns, varying levels of precipitation, and drought-like conditions induced by an increase in anthropogenic emissions, leading Paul Crutzen to declare a new geologic epoch in Cuernavaca, Mexico (2000) during a gathering of atmospheric chemists, the conditions continued to be exacerbated by the close of the 19th-century.

Description: While many works of literature have been translated across the globe, there are still many texts that have been neglected in translation studies. If we compare Germans Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm to Ion Creanga, a 19th century Moldovan/Romanian author who adapted some of their stories into Romanian, we can recognize at once that untranslated voices can marginalize literary communities. Creanga’s “Capru cu trei iezi” (or The Goat and Her Three Kids), an adaptation of “The Wolf and the Seven Young Goats” by the Brothers Grimm, has been told to every Romanian child at bedtime since the turn of the 20th century, and yet, most outside of the country have not heard his version.

The Classroom as Counter-Archive: Place-Based Pedagogies of Community Empowerment

Education is an ideal means of empowerment, for it enables students to take ownership of the historical and personal archives that stand for their communities. This panel regards the classroom as a privileged site of such empowerment—particularly for students from immigrant families—and seeks proposals on how to equip them to become active agents in producing their own interpretations of the cultural and spatial memory they share with their forebears.
