From the Front Lines: Is Anybody Listening?

OCTOBER 27-28, 2006 8th annual Newman Literary Festival
Newman University
3100 McCormick Avenue, Wichita, KS 67213

DESCRIPTION:
The focus of this year's festival is the spoken and written word and what
it is doing to change the consciousness of America. What are our writers,
filmmakers, and performing artists saying about a world at war, in terror,
in chaos? Given the hurried, shattered, censored, and indifferent world in
which we find ourselves, how are our literary and popular voices attempting
to reflect or revive it? The battle lines are there. Is anyone still listening?

"CONTEMPLATING THE VOID": POSTGRADUATE SYMPOSIUM XIII, SCHOOL OF ENGLISH, UNIVERSITY
OF NEW SOUTH WALES, Sydney, Australia, October 12-13, 2006

What fills the gap left by the evacuation of the grand narratives? What is the value of negative space?
Silence? Incoherence? What are the politics and problematics of representation in a world oft marked
by political, intellectual, and spiritual chaos? In contemporary society, how can language function as a
bridge, articulating loss and thereby filling the void with significance?
