'Print Culture and the Novel: 1850-1900'

A One-Day Conference, English Faculty, University of Oxford

No longer was it possible for people to avoid reading matter; everywhere
they went it was displayed - weekly papers at a penny or twopence, complete
books, enticing in their bright picture covers, at a shilling, and all fresh
and crisp from the press. No wonder that the fifties, which saw the spread
of Smith's stalls to almost every principal railway line in the country,
were also the period when the sales of books and periodicals reached
unprecedented levels.

CALL FOR PAPERS

2006 Film and History League Conference: "The Documentary Tradition"

8-12 November, 2006

Dolce Conference Center

Dallas, TX

AREA: Robert J. Flaherty

Traditionally considered to be documentary cinema=92s defining text,

Robert J. Flaherty=92s Nanook of the North (1922) has both an iconic and

problematic status in contemporary studies of non-fiction film.

Flaherty himself has been a figure similarly revered and reviled in

Session:
American Medieval: American Popular Culture in Medieval Film
42nd International Congress on Medieval Studies
Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI
May 10-13, 2007

Depictions of the "medieval" in film often have very little to do with
medieval culture. Instead, the medieval period often becomes a
metaphor for issues, anxieties, and themes that are both modern and
culturally/nationally situated. This panel explores American
cinematic constructions of the "medieval" in an effort to discuss
medievalism in terms of American cultural studies.
