CONFERENCE POSTPONED TO SEPTEMBER 23-24 2021

Considering the recent global events, we have unfortunately decided to postpone the conference (originally scheduled for September 25-26, 2020) to a further date. The safety of our speakers, staff, and academic cohort has been the decisive argument in this matter.

We will announce a new date as soon as possible, but the most likely period is the second half of September 2021.

Laverne Cox’s debut role in Orange Is The New Black seemed to usher in a new era for trans representation. In 2014, TIME decreed that the “Trans Tipping Point” had arrived and heralded a path to trans acceptance through visibility on the screen. Yet this increase in visibility has not formed an antidote to rampant transphobia. In 2021, thirty-three states have introduced 117 bills to limit and curtail the rights of trans people across the United States. In this panel, we consider the effects of hypervisibility in a time of public transphobia across media.

While the year 2020 is known around the world as a time when everything changed, the year marked an especially different turn for the Asian American community. Many have interpreted the recent waves of shocking racist attacks and anti-Asian sentiments targeting the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities as a direct link to the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. However, in reality, it is critical to understand that the voice of anti-Asian violence and hate is far from being a new concept in America.

In the world of teen drama (or YA drama, as some prefer), there are a number of ways to represent adolescence and its attendant horrors, and we’ve seen a great deal of fantasy-based approaches; beginning with Buffy, some establish that high school is actual hell. But few series come close to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s devotion to that idea. The Netflix series (2018-20), based on the Archie Comics spin-off and featuring a much darker version of Sabrina Spellman, may be difficult for audiences to reconcile with ABC’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the previous adaptation. While one is a teen sitcom in which Sabrina’s powers get her into wacky situations, and she is supported by a talking Salem the cat, the other might feel closer to The Craft.

For decades, eighteenth-century periodicals have been readily available in countless digital databases--Google Books, the Burney Newspapers Collection, Adam Matthews Eighteenth-Century Journals, Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Collections Online, --simultaneously, feminist literary scholars have been recovering previously ignored eighteenth-century women writers. While scholarly journals and as a result, classrooms, have included more women writers into the literary canon, the critical bias of novels and poetry over periodicals, fiction over nonfiction, remains.

growth “speaks to our condition,” as the Quakers say.

disguise otherwise risky affirmations. The authors that Pintard defines as “erudite
libertines” of the seventeenth century, a period when, like everyone else, even
atheists and sceptics died “well confessed and having received Holy Communion”,
were masters of hypocrisy by necessity. The same also went for the thought of the
following century, the century of Reason and the Enlightenment, in which freedom of
