Undergraduate Conference: Humanity, Technology, and the Good Life

Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts, University of Dallas
deadline for submissions:
Sunday, December 6, 2026

In Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV throws down a gauntlet: “When
human dignity is threatened by new forms of dehumanization, ours is the pressing duty to remain
profoundly human.” What does it mean to remain “profoundly human” in a technological society?
Are any of the advancements that we have come to perceive as essential to western standards of living
at odds with human flourishing? What are the implications, benefits, and costs of the relationship
between humanity and technology? The Braniff Graduate Student Association (BGSA) invites
undergraduate students in all liberal arts disciplines to consider these questions at the Braniff
Undergraduate Conference in the Liberal Arts (BUCLA) on February 5-6, 2027.

Call For Contributions "Contested Meanings of Freedom in the United States"

RSAJournal, no. 38 (2027)
deadline for submissions:
Wednesday, September 30, 2026

As mass movements and resistance struggles from Reconstruction and Indigenous sovereignty through women’s liberation and civil rights activism make clear, American history has been indelibly shaped by divergent, contradictory, and deeply contested understandings of a common political language centered on “freedom.”  Far from a static, settled, or predetermined concept, Eric Foner contends that “freedom” has proved “a terrain of conflict, open to very different and sometimes contradictory interpretations.” The story of the United States is, in no small part, a contest over what it means to be free.

Various modern media types, including but not limited to literature, film, television, animation, TTRPGs, video game RPGS, comics and graphic novels, podcasts, etc., offer an array of opportunities for exploring what we make of the "medieval" and why. We are interested in work that engages more than traditional examples of medievalism, especially that which might speak for or represent perspectives traditionally deemed "unruly."          When Get Out was released in 2017, Jordan Peele’s landmark debut feature signified a major inflection point in the history of horror. Not only did the film garner a rare blend of blockbuster commercial success and critical reputability perhaps not seen since The Silence of the Lambs (1991) or The Sixth Sense (1999), but it also broke through the confines of genre to become a larger pop cultural phenomenon.

From Authenticity to Commodity: Italian Food in Literature, Film, and Popular Culture

American Comparative Literature Association (ACLA)
deadline for submissions:
Monday, September 21, 2026

Abstract

This seminar proposes to examine Italian and Italian American food studies through the comparative frameworks of transnational circulation, intermedial representation, and cultural translation. Rather than approaching food as a stable marker of heritage or authenticity, the seminar treats it as a mobile signifying practice through which texts, images, commodities, and affects travel across linguistic, national, and medial boundaries. Food thus becomes a privileged comparative object: it links literature to film, advertising to visual culture, and national discourse to diasporic rearticulation.

John Steinbeck and Robinson Jeffers: A Special Issue of Steinbeck Review

The Steinbeck Review
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, October 31, 2026

John Steinbeck once remarked that fellow-Californian Robinson Jeffers wrote some the “greatest poetry since Whitman.” Steinbeck kept a significant collection of Jeffers work both in his personal library and Ed Ricketts’ Lab, where Jeffers was an influential topic in their endlessly varied conversations. When asked about possibility of meeting the poet, Steinbeck declined with a telling degree of reverence: “His poetry is perfect to me, and I don’t think one should get the man mixed up with his work.” Although they did eventually meet—notably when Steinbeck lived in Monterey in 1944—their relationship was one of distant, though friendly, mutual respect.
