The Department of English and Foreign Languages at Texas Southern University
seeks papers for its interdisciplinary conference on its 2006 theme, "The
Blues II." We encourage interdisciplinary approaches and welcome proposals
that consider any facet of this topic. In addition to formal papers, we
encourage proposals for art displays, performances in music and drama,
panels, group discussions, short seminars, or workshops.

Franklin Burroughs, author and conservationist, has been added to the
program of featured speakers for the Fourth NEW-CUE Writers' Conference
and Workshop in honor of Rachel Carson in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, in
June, 2006. Burroughs' work has been included in publications such as
the Kenyon Review, Harper's Magazine, The American Scholar and the
Georgia Review, and he has won critical acclaim for his two books Billy
Watson's Croker Sack and Horry and the Waccamaw.

Both historic and contemporary representations of women in word and image are understood, all too often, through the madonna/whore dichotomy: from the delicate Victorian waif to the red-lipsticked vamp of fifties film noir; from Molly Bloom to Buffy. This conference will consider iconic representations and enduring archetypes of women, addressing their persistent appeal and exposing their limitations. What makes certain versions of femininity archetypal? Can they be subverted, challenged, and/or reclaimed?

Writing in the Interdisciplines: A Student's Guide to Writing about
Literature and Media

Proposals/contributions are invited for an edited anthology offering
concrete advice to undergraduate students on approaches to writing on
literature, media, and cultural studies. This collection is intended
for interdisciplinary courses in departments such as American
Studies, Women's/Gender Studies, and Ethnic/Area Studies in which
students have had little or no previous training on writing about
cultural texts (i.e. literature, film, television, and music).

Entries may cover issues such as style, technical terms, critical
theories, research approaches, and more.
