DECOLONIZING THE PAST: RENAISSANCE HUMANISM BEYOND WESTERN EUROPE
This panel calls for a reevaluation of Renaissance humanism, long considered
a hallmark of Western social and intellectual development. Searching the
interstices of Renaissance humanism suggests its complicity with Western
European colonization, not only of physical spaces but also of cultural and
linguistic domains. An example of humanism's continuing colonizations is
the definition of what constitutes the center of Europe and what is
considered its margins. The consequences of this definition include our
perception of a Europe split on an East/West axis, and the fact that what we

J.D. Salinger, focusing on critical analyses of his works. The ideal
author will have a Ph.D., broad knowledge of Salinger's life and works,
and an ability to write clearly and succinctly for students in both high
school and college. This large project (250,000-300,000 words) must be
completed within two years. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines will be

We would like to invite you to contribute an essay to a critical anthology
that examines the relationship between imitation, creation, and the
created object. Our working title is *Mirror up to Nature: Art as
Imitation.* The collection will consist of a set of essays in various
disciplines within the Arts and Humanities, essays which will explore the
issues of mimesis and metaphor in the context of modern, postmodern, and
contemporary art, literature, film, and architecture.

(510), Chaim Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca close The New Rhetoric on a decidedly political note. They suggest that a new rhetoric that explicitly describes modern discourse exposes the political structures of that discourse, and thus has political as well as philosophical utility. However, during its initial reception, the political implications of a new rhetoric were overshadowed in the flurry of interest over the ?universal audience? and other markedly philosophical questions.

We invite proposals for an interdisciplinary collection on the encounter of
artists, musicians, poets and writers, and filmmakers working within
