The Mirror Crack'd: medieval fantasy in JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the
Rings and its
Sources: Call for Papers for Session at Leeds International Medieval
Congress 2006, sponsored by The Tolkien Society
 
Aspects of the fantastic dominate the works of Tolkien, but they also
form important and
memorable episodes in the medieval works known to have influenced his
creativity. In addition, medieval fantasies characterise the works of
writers from Spenser to Bram Stoker, and beyond.
Topics for papers might include:
•   The Lord of the Rings and Medieval Romances
•   Monsters and their meaning in The Lord of the Rings
•   Beneficial fantasy in The Lord of the Rings

CALL FOR PAPERS:

Papers are invited for submission for a panel on Representing Black Europe in
Cinema at the upcoming Modern Language Association (North East) conference in
Philadelphia, March 2-5, 2006. This panel will explore the Black American
presence in European cinema and Black Europeans in film, contrasting the
representation of the American expatriate experience with the representation of
Black communities in Europe.

Proposals sought for an essay collection with the working title, "'A woman sworn to lucidity': Perspectives on the Career and Influence of Adrienne Rich."

Women Writing Nature: A Feminist View

Rachel Carson, writer, scientist, and ecologist, became famous as a naturalist and science writer for the public. Embedded in her early works was the view that human beings were but one part of nature distinguished primarily by their power to alter it, in some cases irreversibly. With the 1962 publication of Silent Spring, she challenged the practices of agricultural scientists and the government, and called for a change in the way humankind viewed the natural world. We are considering proposals for sessions organized around a theme, special panels, and/or individual papers. Sessions are scheduled in 1½ hour slots, ideally with four papers or speakers per standard session.

This is a general call for papers for the 2006 SW/Texas Regional
Conference of the American Popular Culture/American Culture Association.
The general topic this year will be the Conflict between the Genders in
Communication and Action, however, all gender subjects will be accepted
and presented. The deadline for abstracts is November. The conference
will be held at the Albq Hyatt Regency Hotel February 8-11. This is a
laid back conference with a lot of history and scenery in the area for
after conference activity and we always experience a wide variety of
