The Leon Edel Prize is awarded annually for the best essay on Henry James
by a beginning scholar. The prize carries with it an award of $150, and
the prize-winning essay will be published in HJR.

The competition is open to applicants who have not held a full-time
academic appointment for more than four years. Independent scholars and
graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Essays should be 20-30 pages (including notes), original, and not under
submission elsewhere or previously published.

This is a call for brief proposals or abstracts (200 to 300 words maximum)
for a collection of new essays on Twelfth Night, now under contract with
Routledge.

All approaches are welcome (New Critical to New Historicist, feminist to
materialist, queer theory to psychoanalytic, performance to reception
history, etc.), as are proposals from scholars in Germany, China, Japan,
and elsewhere who might wish to write about the reception of the play in
these or other non-English speaking countries. Ideas for including black
and white illustrations are also desirable.

The deadline for proposals is August 15, 2004. If your proposal is
accepted, the deadline for the completed essay will be June 2006.
