Samyukta: A Journal of Gender & Culture
deadline for submissions:
Tuesday, August 31, 2021

Samyukta: A Journal of Gender & Culture proposes to bring out a special number on early women’s magazines in Malayalam. These magazines played a significant role in negotiating the gender dynamics in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Keralam. The debates on the lives of women with reference to modernity, colonial or otherwise, have been fraught with paradoxes and contradictions that require detailed interrogation. While the grand narratives of the times were scripted by and for men, women’s lives were punctuated  mostly by  the banalities of everyday lives. The new found interest at the turn of the twenty-first century in micro-narratives that tell alternate stories contesting the dominant has prompted us to undertake the present study.

HUNGER AND WASTE

Volume 40, Number 1, Spring 2022

Issue Editor: Isabelle Meuret

This issue of Literature and Medicine will interrogate expressions of hunger and waste in both literary and biomedical contexts.

Hunger is a physiological disposition, a daily preoccupation, and a metaphor for desire. On another scale, global hunger—leading to malnutrition and starvation—affects hundreds of millions living in poverty. As for waste, the dearth, careless use, or squandering of resources, together with climate change and other environmental challenges, have raised new concerns about food supplies and unequal access.

In the early modern period, numerous travel memoirs and geographical texts assumed the form of printed compilations or composite collections. For a long time, only bibliophiles and book collectors, in their search for the “complete” collections, considered such texts as having true unity; Boucher de La Richarderie (1808), who put together a bibliography that is authoritative to this day, is a case in point. Such collections were often used as a way to find precise texts from such and such traveller or chronicler, without taking into account the book in which the texts featured, qua book.
