We are excited to share that Applause, the national literary arts and culture magazine housed at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (Est. 1980), is currently accepting submissions from undergraduate students around the country for our 33rd issue. We would be honored if you would share this information with your students. We are accepting submissions until 2/14/2023, but the earlier the better for submissions! 

This thematic issue of LINGUACULTURE deals with mobility and cultural exchanges between Europe and Asia from a humanities perspective, with a focus on the English speaking world. We invite contributions in the fields of literature, language, cultural and translation studies, as well as interdisciplinary approaches dealing with the past or present movement of people and ideas between the two continents, especially in relation to the Anglophone world, highlighting from individual experiences to larger societal phenomena. Papers reporting on original investigations and critical analysis of research and developments in the field of drama and theatre are invited for the 45th Comparative Drama Conference, hosted by Rollins College in Orlando, Florida, to be held March 30-April 1,  2023 .

Why do we do what we do in the field of literary studies? Why does it matter? To whom? What redemptive or transformative work does literature do? When? Where? How? We invite reflection and conversation about the different kinds of work literature does to and through writers, readers, teachers, thinkers, and scholars. Our topic is intentionally broad as we seek to inspire, encourage, and celebrate the creation, interpretation, and appreciation of literature from any historical period and any genre. Our format is inclusive with panels for professors, graduate and undergraduate students, as well as scholars from multiple disciplines including English, Modern Languages, Theology, Education, Psychology, Science, and Humanities.

What do the words “Arab” and “Arabic” mean today? What have they meant historically? What continuities and ruptures do they signify in contemporary discourses of the Middle East? In a world in which conflict, migration, transnational movements, the blurring of borders, and (self-)translation have become everyday realities for millions of Arabs, these questions have attained new urgency. In this seminar, we explore the relationship between the Arabic language and Arab identity and community in the transnational contexts that have long defined both.

Call for paper and panel proposals on all areas of Jewish Studies regardless of discipline, geographical focus, or time period.  The WJSA usually includes panels about Jews in the American West, pedagogical aspects in Jewish Studies, and contemporary Jewish issues.  It welcomes panels devoted to the major anniversaries of events in Jewish history or important Jewish individuals in 2023, for example:

In conceptualizing nationalism and “nation-ness,” Benedict Anderson considered not only their emergence and historical transformations but also “why […] they command such profound emotional legitimacy” (Anderson 2006, 4). Intrinsic to the widely accepted understanding of the nation as a politically powerful construct is its affective depth, which shapes the atmospheres, spaces, bodies, and relations of national life.
