We live in a media culture saturated with exposure: livestreamed violence, viral confession, algorithmic archives, state inquiries, surveillance footage, and ecological catastrophe rendered in real time. Testimony circulates rapidly, often before it can be contextualised or absorbed. Truth claims are asserted, contested, amplified, and undermined within institutional and digital infrastructures that shape what counts as evidence and who is recognised as credible.

The first panel, a roundtable on “Teaching Kate Chopin,” seeks short (seven- to eight-minute) papers/remarks that address any aspect of or strategy for teaching Chopin’s life or work to today’s students—to students of any kind at any level using any materials or technology in any educational environment anywhere. Reading and discussing stories that include representations of sexual assault involves a paradox. There is a need to represent, expose, and challenge the ideologies and systems that enable such assault. At the same time, interacting with such representations can be an imposition on those who experience sexual violence, misogyny, and cisheterosexism. Because sexual assault trauma is often felt in the body in recurring reverberations throughout a person’s life, textual representations of it may trigger a trauma response. Rape culture ensures that sexual assault remains obscured by shame and victim-blaming, making it profoundly difficult to resolve sexual assault trauma.

Food is essential to the survival of the living, but its cultural significance does not cease at death. Across South Asia, death and mourning are accompanied by a range of food-related practices: cooking, offering, carrying, abstaining, fasting, feeding, sharing, distributing, refusing, burying, burning, or disposing of food. Meals may be prepared for mourners; particular foods may be offered to the deceased, ancestors, spirits, religious specialists, or members of the community; certain ingredients may be prohibited during mourning; and food may be placed beside the dead, carried to cremation or burial sites, offered at shrines or monasteries, distributed among participants, or consumed collectively as part of commemorative rites.

In recent decades, South Korean popular culture, commonly referred to as the Hallyu Wave, has taken the world by storm. Whether through K-Pop, K-dramas, or Korean cinema, this cultural phenomenon has eSountered a phase of “compressed modernity” (Kyung-Sup 1999, 2010), wherein the world appears smaller as Korean popular culture makes significant inroads not only across East Asia but also in countries such as the United States, Brazil, Argentina, various African nations, Europe, and South Asia.

Over the past three decades, fan studies have developed sophisticated accounts of participatory culture, collective intelligence, affective engagement, and transformative practices (Jenkins 2006; Booth 2015; Hills 2017). At the same time, scholarship has increasingly addressed the investigative dimensions of audience participation. Mittell’s concept of “forensic fandom” (2009), for example, highlights practices of close reading, clue collection, speculation, and collaborative interpretation in response to complex narrative worlds. Fans thus become active investigators who uncover hidden meanings, solve mysteries, and assemble fragmented information across media texts. More recently, such investigative practices have expanded beyond fictional worlds.
