The Midlands Interdisciplinary Victorian Studies Seminars are held
regularly in Birmingham, UK as a research forum for academics working
in the Victorian period. This study day will be a special session of

examine the political and cultural realities of popular music forms and the
interplay between these forms. Considering the conference’s title,
“The Documentary Tradition,” research that is able, within a documentary
film form, to make sense of musical practice in culture and potentially
everyday life will be considered for the “Music and Performance”

particular interest are papers which address the role of complexity and
cultural artifacts in relation to multiculturalism, nationalism,
transnationalism, postcolonialism, or identity politics, as manifest
withinin (or in relation to) the public sphere.
