‘Genre and Nation: British and Australian cinema, 1960 – now’ Conference

Despite the brutal, colonial origins of Australian settlement, and the ongoing consequences for Indigenous people, an enduring connection between Britain and Australia remains. As Rolfe (2022) argues, until the 1960s, Australians incorporated a dual identity as both Australians and Britons, and although American influence has grown since then– the British/Australian relationship persists and has been widely explored in screen media.

The standing Poetry and Poetics session seeks abstract submissions exploring any aspect of poetry and poetics. Please bring us paper topics that encompass a wide range of subgenres; bring us specific time periods; bring us unique critical approaches.

The South Central Modern Language Association's Southern Literature Panel is currently seeking abstracts for conference papers that discuss literature and/or authors from the American South. This includes literature written by Southern writers or literature set in the South. Papers on any related topic will be considered for the session taking place during SCMLA's 81st Annual Conference in New Orleans, LA on September 19-21, 2024.

“Out of the Box: Rethinking Southeast Asia through Comics” (MLA 2025)

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MARCH 21 2024

We invite paper proposals for a non-guaranteed session organized by the Southeast Asian and Southeast Asian Diasporic Forum for the January 2025 Modern Language Association conference in New Orleans. We seek papers about comics and graphic narratives by authors from Southeast Asia and its diasporas. Given Southeast Asia’s linguistic diversity, we welcome papers about comics in languages other than English.

Crime Fiction in the Multilingual Classroom (Teaching Forum, Clues: A Journal of Detection)

Crime fiction sheds a light on different cultures and societies, as well as challenges assumptions about gender, class, race, and ethnicity. By luring students into thinking that popular fiction is an easy read, an increasing number of language teachers have used crime fiction to teach both foreign languages and cultures. At the same time, crime fiction instructors have expanded their syllabi to include texts in translation that tackle important issues such as gender violence, environmental concerns, and racism. This Clues Teaching Forum invites short essays that address the following questions:

This special issue of CLCWeb is about how theorists and analysts of culture are approaching formal questions in the context of technologies of machine learning and generative AI, and, also, conversely, about how to theorize AI’s forms.

The Religion and Literature permanent section invites proposals for the 2024 Midwest Modern Language Association convention in Chicago. Those aspiring to be on the panel should feel empowered to offer proposals that interpret the concept of religion rather loosely by potentially including the humanities and health as faith driven institutions. Maintaining a broad interpretation of religion to include all intersections of faith, folklore, belief, and literature; expressions of belief may include creeds, mottos, mission statements, charters, manifestos, doctrines, etc. 

Making Climate Change Issues Visible in East European Culture, Media and Politics

Responses to climate change, ecosystem destruction, deforestation, pollution, urban and rural ecological movements and environmental policies in ROmanian and Eastern Europe.

We are seeking additional chapters for our volume. Proposals for chapters discussing cities of Southeast Asia and Latin America are invited. Proposals for essays within 500 words and a short bio are to be submitted by April 30, 2024, with complete articles within 8,000 words (excluding works cited and endnotes), expected by June 15, 2024. We are using the MLA Handbook 8th Edition in this book. The Great Pittsburgh Fire occurred on April 10, 1845, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The fire destroyed over a thousand buildings and caused significant damage to the city's commercial district, including the destruction of warehouses, businesses, and homes. The disaster left thousands of people homeless and caused millions of dollars in property damage.
