CFP: Jane Austen and Contemporary Literature and Culture (UK) (04/30/07; 06/23/07)

Proposals are invited for contributions to a study day on this theme at Chawton House, Hampshire, UK (the home of Jane Austen's brother). We wish to bring together scholars with an interest in contemporary re-writings and re-visions of Jane Austen, with a view to publishing an edited collection of essays. Possible topics might include:

Jane Austen sequels or prequels, re-writings such as Bridget Jones's Diary, film and TV adaptations, phenomena such as Karen Joy Fowler's The Jane Austen Book Club and the Jane Austen Guide to Dating, biographies, Jane Austen pornography, etc.

Writing Empires I: Composition and the Expansion of English
Writing programs as "empire-building" enterprises for English studies;
movements toward independence of writing programs from English programs;
WAC/WID as resituating English studies.

Writing Empires II: Writing Histories and Theories
Technologies, practices, and pedagogies of writing in the histories of
19th- and 20th-century imperialism, anti-imperial movements, and globalization.

The growing interest in medieval disability has the potential to modify both our understanding of historical models of disability and our understanding of medieval society. This collection has the specific goal of looking at the legal uses and intellectual/creative understanding of disability in the Middle Ages (within Europe in the first instance, but with some interest in other geographical areas as well). We welcome proposals of roughly 1000 words or finished papers from any relevant discipline or from between disciplines (history, theology, various literatures, philosophy, etc). Possible topics include but are not limited to the following:

Culture in the Writing Classroom will consist of 15-20 essays that =
showcase effective pedagogical ideas on bringing pop culture into the =
writing classroom. The intended audience consists of graduate students =
and others who are teaching composition for the first time and want to =
find a place (a contact zone) where they first can meet their students =
and then help students make the journey through a composition class.
