Storytelling: Academic Perspectives." The gathering will serve as a
prelude to the 2007 Festival of Cartoon Art, which runs from October

celebration of the 100th birthday of Milton Caniff. For the first
time, the triennial Festival is sponsoring an academic pre-conference

ACCIDENTAL ENVIRONMENTS

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Haun Saussy

Professor of Comparative Literature, Yale University

In the age of globalism, the humanities have become the place for forming
new pathways that connect academic disciplines and refashion curricular
boundaries. Rapid change calls upon the scholar to embody a new spirit of
trans/inter-disciplinarity, leading to scholarship that detects and crosses
geographical and disciplinary divisions.

Thomas King has called the border delimiting the boundaries of the Canadian nation "an imaginary line...a political line, that border line. It wasn't there before the Europeans came. It was a line that was inscribed across the country after that." This panel will explore how literatures written in and about Canada seek to define, question, or contest the idea of the Canadian nation(s), or engage with the notion of a Canadian literary canon. Papers on Quebecois, First Nations, and diasporic nationalisms in Canada are particularly encouraged.
