Teaching Marginalised and Contested Histories: Pedagogy, Curriculum, and Historical Knowledge

Sarah Trott & Alice Brumby / York St John University
deadline for submissions:
Monday, January 11, 2027

What does it mean to teach a history that has been marginalised?

Questions surrounding the teaching of marginalised, contested, and difficult histories have become increasingly important across educational systems, universities, museums and other sites of historical education internationally. Yet discussions of inclusive and diverse curricula can sometimes obscure a more fundamental question: how, and at what point, does a history become marginalised in the first place?

No Right Way to Be a Woman: Comment Culture and the Digital Policing of Femininity

Intersections (Australia)
deadline for submissions:
Tuesday, November 24, 2026

When, in September 2026, a post declaring the actress Katrina Kaif "finished" following her return to public life after childbirth accumulated lakhs of views and comments, the disproportion between judgement and object became, itself, the more legible text. A comparable structure recurred that same year for the South Korean singer Jennie, whose performances at Mad Cool Festival and Lollapalooza Chicago drew, alongside widespread acclaim, a coordinated wave of "netizen" commentary deriding her "leaner frame" — two women, two national contexts, two entirely unrelated bodily "failures" (one insufficiently youthful, the other insufficiently substantial), and yet an identical infrastructure of mass, public, collectively affirmed judgement.

Superhero Symposium

Pennsylvania College English Association
deadline for submissions:
Friday, November 20, 2026

The rise of the superhero is one of the most significant cultural developments of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Since the debut of Superman in Action Comics #1 (April 18, 1938), superheroes have evolved from colorful comic-book figures into powerful global symbols that shape conversations about politics, morality, identity, technology, gender, race, mythology, trauma, and resistance. What began with the imaginative vision of Jerry Siegel (writer) and Joe Shuster (artist) has expanded into a worldwide phenomenon spanning comics, film, television, literature, gaming, digital media, and academic discourse.

Architectures of Deceit: Fraud, Imposture, and Deception in Contemporary Screen Culture (under consideration by Edinburgh University Press)

Alice Bardan/Mount Saint Mary's University
deadline for submissions:
Monday, November 30, 2026

Architectures of Deceit provides a timely analysis of how and why imposture has emerged as a shared media logic across cinema, television, streaming platforms, and networked culture.

The volume offers a new critical lens for examining how contemporary screen culture negotiates identity, class mobility, institutional legitimacy, technological change, and the erosion of social and public trust. It traces a trajectory from fictional impostors and narratives of real-world fraud to deceptive media infrastructures and machine-generated images.

The volume is organized into four parts:

AATI 2027 University of Puerto Rico, March 5-7, 2027

This panel explores the island as both a place and a figure for thinking about borders, mobility, and belonging. Islands are shaped by movements of arrival and departure,
connection and separation, exchange and exclusion. Linguistic islands, diasporic communities, and bodies marked as other all take shape through this double movement of separation and connection. Islands also name a condition: being set apart, forming a world at the edge of another, connected outward by water rather than enclosed by land.

The Legacy of Jason Voorhees: Essays on the Friday the 13th Franchise

Shane H Weathers and Brandon West
deadline for submissions:
Saturday, January 2, 2027

Editors Introduction:

While John Carpenter’s Halloween catapulted the slasher subgenre to the front of popular culture, Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th (1980) cemented the formula with a higher body count and an increased focus on sex, violence, and gore. Alongside Black Christmas, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Halloween, the Friday the 13th series helped establish many of the conventions that fans are now accustomed to, and its first sequel introduced an iconic killer with Jason Voorhees. The success of the original film led to a franchise comprised of twelve theatrical films as of 2026, in addition to a short film released in 2025 and a 2026 television series.

We often think of community through a positive lens, but is community always a force for good? How might “community” be simulated, commodified, branded, weaponized, or made into a technology for compliance? Why does the vulnerability to authentic communities matter now in a world where technology has made connection more accessible than ever?

Environmental Hope: Genres and Methods

Environmental humanists and literary scholars have many genres for theorizing environmental fear, injustice, despair, or pessimism. Environmental gothic, noir, picaresque, horror, and crime fiction are all genres theoretically defined by and committed to engaging with exploitation and terror in historically and formally specific ways. And the hermeneutic of suspicion, devoted to diagnosing and revealing obscured forces and causes, is especially attuned to those that produce systemic violence. We know how to read for necropolitics, colonialism and neocolonialism, anti-Blackness, objectification, and misogyny.

In the 2000s and 2010s, social networking facilitated citizen-based activism of enormous significance like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo. But in the 2020s, corporate enshittification and government surveillance have restricted the reach of social networking tools. For example, Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter meant that many users left X rather than adapt their activist practices to the restrictive corporate environment (Tenbarge & Collier 2024). Instances such as the Trump administration’s use of social media posts to target international students during the Gaza protests caused many users to avoid social media altogether (Lonas Cochran 2025).
