Despite a wealth of historical research on Liberia – a country founded by black U.S.settlers brought to West Africa in the 1820s, under the auspices of the American Colonization Society (ACS) – Liberian English and Anglophone Liberian literature remain under-researched.

This seminar session at the ESSE 2022 Conference in Mainz, Germany (August 29-September 2, 2022 - https://esse2022.uni-mainz.de/) aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for authors, linguists, and literary scholars working on Liberia (incl. the country’s transnational connections).

Three key aims are:

Antidepressant, anti-anxiety, and insomnia prescriptions have also hit record highs. Now public health bodies are embarking on the most ambitious vaccination campaign in US history. Living through the chronic sequelae of these interlocking (and still unfolding) crises is bearable only by recourse to a pharmaceutical fix.

The concept of virtual worlds, while not new, has become a normalized part of 21st-century consciousness in the wake of the worldwide novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Once a realm reserved for playful escape, “dissolv[ing] the constraints of the anchored world so that we can lift anchor—not to drift aimlessly without point, but to explore anchorage in ever-new places” (Heim, 1993), virtual spaces have taken center stage in our everyday lives. Our meeting places, our workplaces, our places of learning, even the places where we unite to break bread have shifted from the physical realm to the virtual.

What is television’s capacity to elicit empathy?

From the global to the individual level, our sense of community has undergone a profound transformation within just a couple years. Where it once suggested closeness and intimacy, community now paradoxically demands that we maintain a healthy distance from one another—each one of us a monad tucked away in our respective homes, our old sources of community displaced as they transition to virtual formats. We even maintain patterns of disciplined isolation to protect the health and safety of those whom we would otherwise not need to consider.

Urzeitig: The Journal of Primeval Studies is devoted to the study of ancient ways of living and knowing, primarily related to the teachings of D. H. Lawrence. The journal aims to both criticize modernity, and to reinvigorate the old pagan ways, through the use of Lawrencian philosophy.

Literary Druid is a journal that destinies to foster research and creative writing in English. It welcomes all nationals to contribute for learning and research purposes. In the form of memoirs, autobiographies, diaries or correspondence, or given a literary spin as autofiction and biofiction, the experiences of East and South-East European women during wartimes and under the oppressive regimes of the twentieth century (a period laden with contrasts, which in the West was hailed as “acentury of women”, Rowbotham 1997, but also framed as an “age of testimony”, Felman and Laub 1992) have been surfacing in the past two decades. The transmission of these narratives followed sinuous paths, taking both verbal and non-verbal forms, relying on both “filial” and “affiliative” networks (Hirsch 2012), and coming from both female victims and female perpetrators (Schwab 2010).

College students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or other learning disabilities are frequently allowed to complete examinations and assignments under separate rules or even in a separate, distraction-reduced setting. For example, although separate room test accommodations are believed to provide students with equal access to testing and thereby improve performance, little experimental research has examined their effects on actual test/essay scores. Even less research and scholarship focus on the location of testing and the impact of testing centers on students with various documented disabilities.
