deadline for submissions:

The Covid-19 pandemic left an indelible mark on both filmmaking and the way in which the general public experienced film. The need for social distancing led film makers and producers to change much of the way films were produced, marketed, and released. Big budget films that would have previously included massive casts had to be adapted, delayed, or sidelined for smaller, easier to produce film projects. Wide-spread theater closures led to the delay of highly anticipated films, elevated the prominence of the independent film industry, and sped the movement of new films to streaming platforms.

“Literature in his truly encyclopedic respect, displaceses the various kinds of knowledge, does not fix or fetishize any of them”: with this statement Roland Barthes affirmed the singularity of the literary fact and the specific relationship between literature and other disciplines. Provocative as it is, literature can at times both attract and irritates, soothe and disturb. Barthes’ claim can certainly apply to Elena Ferrante’s works. Her writing is in dialogue with traditional and contemporary texts, articulating practices and topics which are central not only to the literary universe, but also to philosophy, feminism, history, social sciences, and psychoanalysis.

Modelling Emotion, Modelling Identity in Late Medieval Texts

updated:
Tuesday, June 1, 2021 - 4:17pm
University of Düsseldorf
deadline for submissions:
Sunday, June 20, 2021

The critical field of emotion history has long established a link between emotions and socio-political identity. Emotion historians of the Middle Ages have analysed the ways in which emotional experience and expression shape an individual’s belonging to a specific community, and vice-versa (Rosenwein), or how emotions interact with gender regimes (Boquet). Yet emotions also have the capacity to disturb and reinvent identity categories. Approaching such categories through the prism of emotion thus allows us to account for more mobile and fluid models of identity.
