This panel explores how strategies for reading the Bible shaped literary output during the 16th and 17th centuries. Recent criticism in the field of book history details the reading practices that evolved in response to the Reformation’s call for direct engagement with vernacular scripture. This panel aims to bring fresh thinking in the history of the book into conversation with the perennial topic of the Bible in and as literature, offering new insight into how biblical reading became literary production in this period.

The Velvet Light Trap Issue #88: "Nonfiction Media: Rethinking Documentary and Nonfiction in 2020"
Developing a discussion initiated in the recently-published Literary Geographies 6(1), the journal’s editors seek contributions to an expanded ‘Thinking Space’ section on ‘Literary Geographies in Isolation’ planned for the December issue. We are interested in receiving shorter submissions of 1500-3000 words, including the more personal, polemical or impressionistic. Topics might include, but are not limited to:
armchair tourism in lockdown
reading as virtual fieldwork

Call for contributions: The Jurassic Park Book

Proposals are invited for contributions to a proposed edited collection of new essays on Jurassic Park (1993), its sequels, franchise, and spin offs.
In the wake of the worldwide protests after the killing of George Floyd, and the toppling of statues implicated in the legacy of the slave trade, we propose a special issue of Foundation on the topic of ‘decolonising science fiction’. As John Rieder and others have argued, the emergence of sf as a genre is embedded in colonial discourses of the late nineteenth century. The pursuit of new frontiers in outer space, within the Earth or under the oceans not only mirrored ‘the scramble for Africa’ but was also informed by the racialist and pseudo-scientific ideologies of the period. In more recent years, authors such as N.K. Jemisin, Jeannette Ng and Tade Thompson have sought to confront sf with the racist legacy of its origins.
Language, Literature, and Interdisciplinary Studies (LLIDS), an open access academic e-journal, invites original and unpublished research papers and book reviews from various interrelated disciplines including, but not limited to, literature, philosophy, psychology, anthropology, history, sociology, law, ecology, environmental science, and economics.
Sponsored and funded by the American Humor Studies Association, this program is designed to provide individualized attention and support for emerging scholars who would like to submit an article on humor/comedy studies for publication. Graduate students and those who earned their Ph.D.s in 2020 are welcome to apply.
Full Abstract of Panel: “Solidarity”, an abstract, almost unattainable ideal in higher education, often parades around as a tangible intention, as if it were an easily attainable concept. Wear a solidarity pin! Put a union sticker on your car! John W. Curtis, Director of Research and Public Policy for the American Association of University Professors, states that, “Change does require commitment and shared activism." This panel aims to explore tangible strategies at achieving and fostering solidarity and to offer insight into what commitment to shared activism could potentially look like, particularly in representing women’s, gender, and LGBTQ experiences.
Shortened Description of creative session: This session calls for women and members of the LGBTQ community to submit work related to the function of their wombs and how the womb creates/destroys/changes identity. By creatively exploring our histories of meaning associated with womb, this creative session aims to contribute to NeMLA’s 2021 Philadelphia convention theme, “Tradition and Innovation: Changing Worlds Through the Humanities,” by sharing unique writing experiences that challenge the traditional meanings associated with wombs and present new ways of looking at the literal and figurative womb. Attendance to the conference, whether virtual or in-person is required.
We are pleased to announce our next essay-writing competition. The award is open to all post-graduate research students and to all early career researchers (up to five years after the completion of your PhD) who have yet to find a full-time or tenured position. The prize is guaranteed publication in Foundation (summer 2021).
How do we understand dispossession and subjections that result from imposed demarcations, displacements, and deprivations? How do we see the dispossessed or subjugated as re-articulated in literary works, and what functions can those re-articulations of present/spectral absences play in the literary analysis of the dispossessed territories or bodies, and beyond?
Rhoda Broughton (1840-1920) was considered one of the queens of the circulating library in Victorian England. Broughton is the author of more than twenty novels and a collection of short stories, the latter featuring supernatural and mysterious elements. Her first two novels, Cometh up as a Flower and Not Wisely but too Well, earned her the reputation of a sensation writer; they were followed by other works containing sensational elements and subject-matter, and featuring rebellious, impetuous, passionate but often naïve heroines. She later resorted to one-volume novels in which she revealed skill and depth. These gems include A Beginner, Lavinia and Mamma.

In the Arcades Project, Benjamin wrote that it is from the gates of the imagination that lovers and friends draw their energies. Over the past few decades, scholarship has been ever more inclined to treat the imagination not as false or unreal, but as an embodied, affective, and fluid mode of creating meaning and experiencing the world. The concept of bodily imaginaries in queer and feminist studies, for instance, seeks to overcome the strict duality between imagination and the body: as Maggie Nelson points out in The Argonauts, “in the field of gender, there is no charting where the external and the internal begin and end.”
Over the past several years, graphic medicine has become an increasingly popular genre of graphic narrative. Loosely defined as the intersection between medicine and the comic arts, graphic medicine texts typically provide autobiographical accounts of disability, illness, trauma, and medical procedures through a combination of visual and verbal presentation: charts, diagrams, x-rays, doctor’s reports, patient testimony, and more. This combination of medicine and graphic narrative is a perfect fit.
Vernon Press invites chapter proposals on Gamification in the RhetComp Curriculum. The volume will be edited by Christopher McGunnigle, Seton Hall University.
Throughout the past decades, gamification has become an increasing part of training experiences. To define the term quickly, gamification involves the application of gameplay mechanics to normally non-game-based activities to increase successful activity and performance. Gamification can involve the use of popular video games, adaptations of game shows like Jeopardy, simple chalkboard games like Hangman, or a variety of rhetorical approaches that introduce gaming components into another field.

As an Associate Organization of the Renaissance Society of America, RCSC will be sponsoring one session at next year’s RSA conference in Dublin (7–10 April 2021). We seek proposals for complete panels on any subject of the Renaissance world. Please see the details below about what is expected to propose a panel, or consult the RSA conference website. Per RSA rules, graduate students are permitted on panels, but they must be within 1-2 years of defending their dissertations.
Since Carol J. Clover’s seminal work Men, Women, and Chainsaws (1992), feminist readings of horror movies have gained an enthusiastic theoretical momentum. In employing various frameworks and lenses and by complicating our spectatorial position, this rich corpus of literature has perhaps contributed to a resignification of the genre and its tropes. However, amid the emergence of luminous movies that defy and challenge horror’s misogynistic and racialized foundations, several questions arise: Is contemporary horror cinema really abjuring its heteronormative, original structure? Does mainstream horror still convey trite reactionary messages with renewed vigor?
