"Free Speech and Chicago." This panel will explore the political, economic,=20
and cultural influences which are particular to the city of Chicago, as well=
 as=20
the influence of forums and the art of soapboxing. Around 1913, Chicago was=20=
a=20
hotbed for the emergence of trade unions and labor movements mostly notably=20
the Industrial Workers of the World, better known as IWW and the Wobblies.=20
These groups brought to the forefront a public awareness of social injustice=
s as=20
well as oppressive political ideals. Their goals were social reform and a=20
return to a democratic society that encourages its citizens to speak out for=
=20

"Monster Queens" in Literature, Television, and Film
   
   "Monster Queens" may be any female rulers associated with monsters or monstrosity. Whether they be literal monsters, non-human, or humans with monstrous inner natures, thus metaphorical ones (examples of "monster queens" might include Akasha, Queen of the Vampires, in Anne Rice's Queen of the Damned or Bavmorda, in George Lucas's Willow ), monstrous or "monster queens" figure significantly in our literature and popular culture. Topics related to these characters might include the following issues or areas: androgyny, femininity, gender and power, female appropriation of male roles, and ruler-subject relations.

Western American literature is populated with horses, cattle,
buffalo, wolves, bears, coyotes, birds, and snakes--animals whose
presences help define Western narratives and who are essential to the
mythology of the West. This panel seeks presentations that

This special issue of West Coast Line, to be published in 2007, will
gather together work related to representations of murdered and missing
women. While the focus of the issue is on representations of murdered
and missing women of Vancouver and British Columbia, WCL also invites
