Call for Papers for the 41st Int'l Congress on Medieval Studies,
Kalamazoo, MI, May 4-7 2006:

"Framing, Training and Constraining: Creating an Ideal Reader in the
Later Middle Ages"

Recent meetings of the International Congress have featured panels on
diagrams and codicological devices on the one hand, and on specific
sites and modes of reading on the other. This panel aims to bring
these two strands into a productive tension. We welcome submissions
on the development and transmission of institutional reading
practices as well as papers on the way individual books, circulating
without or beyond institutional support, sought to create ideal
readers more or less on the spot.

Approaching Bo Carpelan’s Urwind (essay collection)

As those who have written on Carpelan know, there’s a dearth of critical material on his work, at least in English. This volume exists to help fill that gap, focusing particularly on his novel Urwind, which won the Finlandia Prize and is considered one of the principle texts of Finnish Modernism.

The book is under contract, to be published by the Research Unit for Contemporary Culture at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. The Research Unit’s publication series began in 1986 and is multi- and interdisciplinary, publishing studies on contemporary culture and cultural theory. Currently, there are more than sixty volumes in the series.
