April 8-10, 2021 | Sheraton Hotel, Birmingham
This panel - for NeMLA's 2021 Convention - explores past and current South Asian cinema's use of Shakespearean drama to respond to three questions. First, to what extent are South Asian filmmakers concerned with reenacting the Western dramatic canon? Second, at what point and why do South Asian filmmakers use Shakespeare as a springboard to explore problems and values that are only tangentially Shakespeare's? Third, what are these problems and values and how to they resonate for today’s global, wired audience?

We are looking for 2 more articles for a collection of essays on "Haunted Nature", preferably from an indigenous perspective but other topics are welcome as well. The collection is a study of human entanglements with nature as seen through the mode of haunting. Together, the essays demonstrate how haunting and being haunted can elucidate our troubled relationships with our natural environments. Seen as an interruption of the present by the past, hauntings address contemporary anxieties concerning human involvement in the transformation of natural environments and their ecosystems, and our complicity in their collapse.

Interaction occurs when interlocutors exchange messages through spoken and written language (Nik, 2010; Ziglari, 2008). It has been conceptually and operationally categorized from different frameworks: as conversational and instructional exchanges, as computer-mediated communication, and through social connections. Following sociocultural theory (SCT), interaction is the key to success in language learning, which is viewed as a process of social interaction (Vygotsky, 1978).

The exploration of prison is not new in literature and theatre. It is one in which convicts tell their stories from the inside. Here, the detained locate their experiences and conditions of prison. According to Arnold Erickson, prison has been a fertile setting for Artists, Musicians and Writers alike. Prisoners have produced hundreds of works that encompassed a wide range of literature books describing the prison experience. Modernist literature and theatre with its eclecticism saw the upsurge in the prison narrative. While Tennessee Williams’ Not about Nightingales establishes the prison genre, John Herbert’s Fortune and Men’s Eyes focuses on the harsh treatment of imprisoned homosexuals.

Signs of the prominence of oil as an object of study in the Environmental Humanities abound: the increasing circulation of terms like “Petroculture” and “petrocapital,” the emergence of the Energy Humanities as a sub-field, and the nearly simultaneous publication of recent volumes such as Living Oil (2016); Petrocultures (2017); and Energy Humanities: An Anthology (2017). Scholars in a range of disciplines are working to theorize and bring into focus the myriad economic, environmental, social, and imaginative ramifications of our relationship with—and dependence on—oil.
The battle against COVID-19 provides the latest example of war used as a metaphor. That is, it exemplifies the persistent, if not seemingly obligatory way that we deploy war as a metaphor against “enemies” such as “crime” and “drugs.” This ubiquitous practice stages metaphorical battlefields and soldiers, including hospitals and healthcare professionals, grocery stores and delivery workers. We might consider how deploying the metaphor of “war” against coronavirus reaps various costs and benefits to its figuration as such. On one hand, local to global populations are recruited to band together against disease. Personal sacrifice and national resources receive renewed attention.
Stoicism is an ancient Greco-Roman philosophy of life based on the notion that "happiness," or eudaemonia, is internally generated, and consists in improving one's own character in the service of humanity at large. One of its major exponents was the first century Roman philosopher Epictetus, who has had a consistent influence on western philosophy, religion, and literature, though the theme of Epictetus and literature has been comparatively little explored.
NeMLA's 2021 convention is officially going virtual!
While we will miss seeing all of you in person next spring, we are excited to focus our energies into making the friendliest academic conference the best possible virtual conference.
Many factors played into this decision, the most important of which is the health and safety of our members. Please know that:
Although the ascendancy of Charles II on the English throne in 1660 was a restoration of Stuart hegemony, thereby giving the latter half of the seventeenth century its name, in reality the age heralded a new mode of living quite different from the one that existed in the pre-Civil War era. The culture and social mores that Charles II had imbibed during his exile at France were incorporated into English lifestyle with his coronation. The sudden release from Puritan stringency that had characterised life under Cromwell resulted in a general relaxation of morality that affected the dynamics of love, marriage, and human conduct.
