A little more than a year since the COVID-19 pandemic began, masks have become an ever-present symbol of our own historical moment. Yet, apart from their present topicality, masks have long played a part in literature and the arts. For this thirteenth issue of Oxford Research in English (ORE), we invite articles that examine the textual, intertextual, and extratextual ways in which masks feature, are performed, or are regarded more generally in literature.

In this edition, Ventana III aims to continue developing a critical discussion about Latin America and how it relates to the rest of the world. This year, the organisation committee proposes to focus on the Glocal to reflect on the tensions between the local and external agents in Latin America. 

Food in the United States is framed by myths and stereotypes. The myth of America as a land of plenty, embodied by the “first” Thanksgiving, is far from the reality the first settlers encountered, and creates an image of harmonious relations between Native Americans and New England colonists that belies the violence of colonization. Today, the image of the “fast food nation” masks the diversity of local cuisines and the rich history of food and foodways in the US.

Call for Papers (Spring Issue 2021) The image of Syria as a war-torn country has always dominated global news cycles. On one hand, news outlets discuss how the international powers serve their own economic and political interests by implementing the Middle East Grand Strategy revolving around ‘ Creative Chaos’ policies. In short, waging a proxy war on Syria’s political and economic system, destroying culture and infrastructure, affecting civilians, violating human rights principles under the pretext of democracy and protection of human rights, with the aim to reshape Middle East politics. In this context, such news cycles persistently distort President Assad's counterstrategy.

People form new grammars and dialects through creative languaging: creolization, code-switching, etc. The results carry markers of intercultural relations and historical tensions. How do raciolinguistics manifest in Medieval literature, Medieval reiterations, and historiography?Languages have a deep capacity to coexist, disrupt, and change, and they survive each cultural encounter either strengthened or weakened, but certainly transmogrified. Language’s abilities to form new grammars and dialects through creative formations is apparent in both Medieval texts and in Medieval reiterations.

The White Rose Medieval Graduate Conference: Self & Selves

The Centre for Medieval Studies at York and the Institute for the Medieval Studies at Leeds have sponsored a new postgraduate conference: the White Rose Medieval Graduate Conference! Our theme for the 2021 virtual conference is Self & Selves.

Aims and Scope: We want to publish articles that articulate the queer perspective, the experience of queerness as well as essays that explore how queerness is both understood and represented in queer communities. Topics might include but are certainly not limited to:

City and Cities in the Epic Imagination

What is a city? How are urban spaces constructed in the epic text? What types of characters inhabit this space? How and why do they enter or leave the city? How do they relate to one another within the urban space as opposed to other spaces? How do they inhabit the city? How do they relate to the city as space?  What activities take place in the city and around the city in the epic narratives?

This section of the academic journal “Sinestesieonline” is open to contributions about theatre and performing arts in all historical ages, forms and variations, in English, Italian and foreign languages. We use double blind peer review.

“Il Parlaggio” is the name created by Gabriele d’Annunzio for the amphitheatre in Vittoriale – a place of empathy, a cradle of emotions, a crossroads of cultures, a connection between antiquity and contemporaneity, an emblem of the “neverending show”.

Deadline Extension: Due to an extension of our funding timeline, we are making a significant extension of this CFP deadline, which will now be July 31, 2021 (moving back work on the proposed edition by a semester as well). We hope this gives people more time to develop a proposal than the original tight turnaround, especially after the semester is over and people can take a step back from what is an unusually disruptive year. CFP: MEDIA REVIEWERS and SCHOLARLY ARTICLES – MIDDLE WEST REVIEW

Middle West Review (MWR) is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal that examines the American Midwest. The journal is published biannually by the University of Nebraska Press.

ABO announces "Concise Collections on Teaching Eighteenth-Century Women," a new series that seeks to promote the teaching of eighteenth-century women writers and artists who remain seriously underrepresented in university classrooms, beyond a small collection of now-canonical authors.

In ABO’s Pedagogies section, we seek to publish groupings of three to five short articles focused on a specific female author/artist/grouping in each of the next six issues. The issue on Charlotte Lennox (Spring 2022) has now selected six proposals and is closed to further submisisons.
