This panel aims to explore how writers and filmmakers have articulated questions of Blackness and Europeanness, migration and cultural belonging, colonial histories and decolonial futures.
In recent decades, artists, scholars, and activists from all over Europe have interrogated and problematized wishful narratives about Europe as a democratic stronghold and a multicultural, borderless space. Working in different media, forms, and genres, these works address urgent questions, such as the racialization of migration, the persistent social and economic inequalities of urban spaces, and the legacies of repressed colonial histories.

UPDATED: The witch is a figure of cultural production. She is a representation of the layers of history and cultural context on the treatment, stereotyping, reception, and representation of powerful women who do not fit into patriarchal structures of power. Whether she be a symbol of women’s disempowerment or a feminist symbol of empowerment, the witch stands as a saturated figure in history, literature, art, and film. This panel is interested in the representation of the witch on a broad scale of culture -- ranging from myth to folklore, to Shakespeare, to WandaVision. The aim of this panel is to bring together a collection of papers that will overlap in the themes of the body, gender, and power.

This edited collection aims to theorize and contextualize transnational manifestations of the “millennial novel,” a term that has been used often derogatively to describe contemporary fiction from a generation of writers living through unprecedented historical upheavals. The book will not debate the use of the term, but rather provide an initial theorization of its forms and primary concerns. Characterised, we might say, by rootlessness, anxiety, ennui, and a general detachment from the governing socioeconomic structures of neoliberal modern life, the millennial novel is a genre at once over-debated and under-examined.

Caste-based discrimination (or Racial discrimination) is ever-present in most parts of the world today. Within India, caste has been a significant movement driven by binaries such as pure vs impure, Aryans vs Dravidians, and high vs low castes, including socio-economic class structure. This edited volume will discuss Dr B. R. Ambedkar’s (April 14 1891 - December 6 1956) autobiography known as Waiting for Visa from multiple perspectives. The aim is to explore contemporary India and her social, political, educational, and religion to changing socio-economic-political-religious conditions keeping the Waiting for Visa at the centre.

The world as we know it is undergoing dynamic transformation. Many gains have been made in recent decades towards loosening the grip of some of the belief systems that have enabled many systemic inequalities in the modern world. The ideological underpinnings of white supremacy, heteropatriarchy and coloniality, for example, have been rigorously challenged and are being steadily eroded, leading to changes in legal frameworks, social practices and the norms of acceptable everyday behaviour. The highly visible and vocal Black Lives Matter movement, which regained international momentum following the murder of George Floyd, has become a widely recognized recent manifestation of this refusal to abide the injustices and indignities of the past.

The Medieval and Renaissance Drama Society (MRDS) continues its annual tradition of inviting all scholars new to the field of early drama studies, in all national and linguistic traditions of early (medieval and early modern) drama, to submit their work to the “New Voices” panel for the 2022 International Congress on Medieval Studies, hosted by the Medieval Institute of Western Michigan University, and to be held virtually, May 9-14, 2022. We specifically invite graduate students and recent PhDs (within four years of receiving the degree) to submit. The panel will consist of three papers and a response by Nicole R.

NOTE TO PROSPECTIVE CONTRIBUTORS: This is a final call for papers for an edited volume on teaching—and teaching with—Nick Sousanis’s graphic work Unflattening in higher education.
