Fourteenth Annual Graduate Humanities Conference

Abstract deadline: 2/16/07

Alan Hollinghurst won the 2006 Man/Booker prize for his novel, "The Line of Beauty." All of his works have a gay character that are central to the novel. What are common themes that appear in his books? Can these stories be told through a narrative/main character who is heterosexual? All presentations that center on Hollinghurst and his novels are welcome.

This call for papers is for a proposed panel to be held at (dis)junctions 2007: Malappropriation Nation at the University of California Riverside’s 14th Annual Humanities Graduate Conference on April 6-7, 2007.

The recent controversy around James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces has exposed several key concerns around the writing of nonfiction. Considering the fact that many “fictional” books contain autobiographical details and that “nonfiction’s” claims to truth have been undercut by poststructuralist criticism of many stripes, has the fiction/ nonfiction binary been rendered useless?

papers for the following session at the MLA's annual conference in
Chicago, IL, December 27-30, 2007.

"Reevaluating Jewish Stereotypes": Jews have long been the target of
antisemitic stereotyping. What is the status of such stereotypes in
the 21st century and in relation to the "new" antisemitism? Have new
stereotypes emerged? Have old ones disappeared? How have Jews
themselves appropriated or engaged such stereotypes?

In chaos theory, strange attractors can describe provisional patterns
emerging from chaos as terms are brought together in equations.
Applied to the humanities, the term 'strange attractors' not only
suggests the influence of chaos theory and intersections with
scientific theory, it also raises images of unlikely combinations,
emerging connections and unstable meanings.

The Academic Anglophone Society of Romania based at Lucian Blaga =
University, Sibiu seeks contributions for the forthcoming issue of its =
periodical, ABC. ABC's new issue is due out in June 2007. We are now =
calling for submissions on any relevant topic in linguistics, literary =
and cultural studies, including project descriptions, theoretical =
interventions, creative-critical essays on emergent subfields, and =
pedagogical approaches to creative writing. We are especially eager for =
academic articles addressing contemporary currents in English Studies. =
