Special issue of Global Nineteenth-Century Studies
CFP: The Global / Oceanic / Nineteenth Century
In November 2022, the Society for Global Nineteenth-Century Studies held a two-day international symposium on “The Global / Oceanic / Nineteenth Century.” Intentionally broad in scope, the symposium sought to cross-map nineteenth-century studies with key currents of the blue humanities, the Black and circum-Atlantic, Indian Ocean studies, oceanic ecologies, post- and decolonialism, maritime globalization, and beyond.
The South Central Modern Language Association's Southern Literature Panel is currently seeking abstracts for conference papers that discuss literature and/or authors from the American South. This includes literature written by Southern writers or literature set in the South. Papers on any related topic will be considered for the session taking place during SCMLA's 81st Annual Conference in New Orleans, LA on September 19-21, 2024.
Please send an abstract of up to 200 words on any topic related to this panel to alana.king@austincc.edu.
Special issue of Global Nineteenth-Century Studies
CFP: Comparative Empire: Conflict, Competition, and Cooperation, 1750-1914
By the time the First World War erupted in 1914, most inhabitants of the globe resided within an empire, either as citizens of a colonizing power or as subjects of colonial rule. The preceding “long nineteenth century” had witnessed the rise of various empires with significant overseas colonial possessions—such as Britain, France, the Dutch Republic (subsequently the Kingdom of the Netherlands), and Meiji Japan—to coexist alongside imperial powers contained within contiguous land masses, including the Ottoman, Russian, and Qing empires.
“Out of the Box: Rethinking Southeast Asia through Comics” (MLA 2025)

We invite paper proposals for a non-guaranteed session organized by the Southeast Asian and Southeast Asian Diasporic Forum for the January 2025 Modern Language Association conference in New Orleans. We seek papers about comics and graphic narratives by authors from Southeast Asia and its diasporas. Given Southeast Asia’s linguistic diversity, we welcome papers about comics in languages other than English.

Disability and musicals have a complicated relationship. Usually comprised of athletic, triple-threat actors, the musical theatre genre is preoccupied with health and wellness–often figuring disability as a stumbling block to a musical’s slickly choreographed world. At the heart of musicals like Side Show, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Light in the Piazza, a disabled character’s non-normative status is of narrative consequence. However, these inclusions of disabled characters with diegetic disabilities are often only remarkable because of their societally defined excessive existence.
Crime Fiction in the Multilingual Classroom (Teaching Forum, Clues: A Journal of Detection)

Crime fiction sheds a light on different cultures and societies, as well as challenges assumptions about gender, class, race, and ethnicity. By luring students into thinking that popular fiction is an easy read, an increasing number of language teachers have used crime fiction to teach both foreign languages and cultures. At the same time, crime fiction instructors have expanded their syllabi to include texts in translation that tackle important issues such as gender violence, environmental concerns, and racism. This Clues Teaching Forum invites short essays that address the following questions:

Call for Proposals for Special Issues
The "Journal of Comparative Literature and Aesthetics" is accepting proposals for Guest-Edited Special Issues.
Individual or joint guest editors are invited to submit proposals in the form of a concept note for the proposed topic, which will be used as a call for submissions.
The proposed topic is expected to be of current critical interest and should contribute significantly to comparative literature, aesthetics, philosophy, intellectual history, art history, criticism of the arts, or the history of ideas.
We are seeking additional chapters for our volume. Proposals for chapters discussing cities of Southeast Asia and Latin America are invited. Proposals for essays within 500 words and a short bio are to be submitted by April 30, 2024, with complete articles within 8,000 words (excluding works cited and endnotes), expected by June 15, 2024. We are using the MLA Handbook 8th Edition in this book. Submissions of abstracts, completed essays, and queries will be directed to citiesglobalsouth@gmail.com. Marianne Hirsch is a William Peterfield Trent Professor Emerita of Comparative Literature and Gender Studies at Columbia University. She writes about the transmission of memories of violence across generations, combining feminist theory with memory studies in a global south perspective.
This guaranteed panel (in-person at the Modern Language Association in New Orleans, Louisiana; January 9-12, 2025) will explore the intersections and overlaps of comedy and horror and the potential power to be derived from disrupting the comedic mode. Cultural Constellations: A Journal of Literature and Art
Cultural Constellations seeks original, previously unpublished submissions for a literary journal published by University of Maryland Global Campus Europe. Managed and edited by faculty representatives of UMGC Europe’s Book Club and Military Community Writers group, we offer a platform for writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry and for visual artists. Our goal is to nourish the magic of artistic expression by offering a passage through which the literary arts may thrive and blossom. Journal themes will focus on art, literary expression, and culture.
The Northeast Popular Culture Association (NEPCA) Politics, Civic Life, and Pop Culture Area invites submissions for NEPCA’s annual conference to be held online October 3 – 5, 2024, and in person at Nichols College, MA. Virtual sessions will take place on Thursday evening and Friday morning via Zoom. In-person sessions will take place on Friday evening and Saturday morning with broadcast via Zoom.
We encourage panel proposals as well as individual submissions.
Papers are generally 15-20 minutes in length. We also encourage works in progress, and informal presentations.

This conference invites individual presentations, panel presentations, short talks, and workshop proposals that include, but are not limited to, the following topics as they relate to interdisciplinary exploration of the latest educational strategies, innovations, and practices.
We invite proposals for the second HEL (History of the English Language) and Writing Studies thread at the 13th Studies in the History of the English Language (SHEL) conference at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey, October 17-20, 2024.
The HEL and Writing Studies thread will explore ways in which the study of language change and variation can contribute to rhetoric and writing studies, and vice versa. When proposing, keep in mind that the history of the English language extends from the origins of the language to very recent history, so proposals that engage contemporary language use through a historical lens are welcome.
