Disruptive Labor: Early Modern Gender, Capital, and Illicit Work
Disruptive Labor: Early Modern Gender, Capital, and Illicit Work interrogates how some labor is denigrated and yet simultaneously supportive of the formation of the capitalistic markets upon which European nations expanded empires. By focusing on how these patriarchal societies see specific types of work as gendered, this edition explores how the gendering of labor establishes dynamic markets as either culturally sanctioned or illegitimate and, in turn, grapples with how cultural approbation undergirds economic growth.
CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS
Please find call for chapters for our forthcoming book: ECO-CONCEPTS: Critical Reflections in Emerging Ecocritical Theory and Ecological Thought which is to be published by Lexington Books (Rowman & Littlefield) in 2023.

With Disney’s initial apathetic response to the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill which recently passed in the state of Florida, it is time to shed light on Disney’s complex relationship with the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Recently, there have been works which briefly discuss the relationship of queerness and Disney, such as Sean Griffin’s Tinker Bells and Evil Queens (2000), Melanie S. Kohnen Queer Representation, Visibility, and Race (2016), Jennifer Sandlin and Julie Garlen’s edited collection Disney, Culture, and Curriculum (2016), and Joseph Brennan’s edited collection Queerbaiting and Fandom (2019). However, the queer artist/contributor has yet to be the main topic of discussion.
Dates: 11-12 July 2022Conference online (via Zoom)
CFP:
It is widely known that ideologies of racism, nationalism, and xenophobia are dangerous and spread all over the world. We want to examine these terms as much as possible, from many perspectives and variable aspects: in politics, society, psychology, culture, and many more. We also want to devote considerable attention to how the phenomena of racism, nationalism and xenophobia are represented in artistic practices: in literature, film, theatre or visual arts.
UPDATE 16 May: The project is secured. We are hoping to improve the table of contents by adding one final contribution dedicated to culture-bound syndromes from the Arab world, the Middle East, Africa or indigenous communities.
We welcome chapter proposals on any cultural syndromes and their representations in popular culture BUT ONLY for these regions. For example:
- the evil eye (Al-Ayn, in Arabic), Djinnati
- Zar possession, brain fag, boufée delirante
- mental illnesses that are often attributed to evil spirits, also known as “jinns” etc.
This panel will spur conversation about ethics instruction across courses like business writing, engineering communication, and health science writing. Ethics instruction is a consideration in accreditation processes for disciplines like engineering, and often such instruction is assigned to the writing classroom. This panel examines how ethics are taught and assessed in writing courses; it seeks new assignments, new pedagogies, and new rubrics that take into account instructional constraints like time and training.
For consideration, please contact najung@wisc.edu by June 14, 2022.
This panel will invite faculty that teach in Professional and STEM writing to discuss their career trajectory. The panel is intended for graduate students seeking to diversify their teaching portfolios, graduates contemplating new career paths, department administrators looking to develop new curricula and courses, and faculty interested in different approaches to writing instruction. It will ask participants to discuss opportunities and challenges they have seen both in the institutional identity of these writing courses and in their subject matter and student body. More specifically, the panel will address the relationship between English departments, literature courses, freshman composition, and these vocational writing courses.
The aim of this conference is to situate the rise of the Far-Right in conjunction with academic spaces and practices i.e., to understand the macroscopic role Academia has in producing, challenging, and responding to the proliferation of this adaptive ideology. How do scholarly practices and the Far-right interact? How do Far-right governments impact Academia, both nationally and globally? Why are Academia’s responses to and/or co-options by the Far-right so culturally impactful?

Venti: Air, Experience, and Aesthetics invokes both the number ‘twenty’ and ‘the winds.’ Conceived in the year 2020, the journal is a forum for discussions centered on the year’s foregrounding of air, its related themes, and historical, interdisciplinary, and critical resonances. Ventiasks: how do we become aware of something invisible and of things that are always in the air — such as the air itself? Investigating this query in a series of thematic issues, Venti explores the indexical qualities of air and our awareness of it through effects and affects.
