English Literature Society on textual culture. "Textual Culture" is
defined broadly, including discussions
of book culture and its formation, the construction of books, orality,
literacy, learning, and the impact of texts on society, among others.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Collection of critical essays on trash cinema

DEADLINE: November 1, 2005

We invite submissions for a critical anthology about the ever-expanding =
world of national and international trash cinema.

As fans of trash cinema, while we do like to think of the form as being =
utterly anti- or counter- =93mainstream=94 cinema, in the ways it =
challenges or reworks many of its assumptions, we are amazed at how many =
trash favorites (both personal and more perennial, if such a thing =
exists) have a striking formal similarity to =96 as well as an appeal =
for devotees of =96 the traditional film canon=92s fare.

LEON EDEL PRIZE

The Leon Edel Prize is awarded annually for the best essay on Henry James by a beginning scholar. The prize carries with it an award of $150, and the prize-winning essay will be published in HJR.

The competition is open to applicants who have not held a full-time academic appointment for more than four years. Independent scholars and graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Essays should be 20-30 pages (including notes), original, and not under submission elsewhere or previously published.
