In recent years Elizabeth Gaskell has attracted renewed scholarly attention,
and contextualisations of her minor works and letters were offered in
addition to the numerous studies of well-known texts such as Mary Barton.
The conference offers to supplement this research by a comprehensive
consideration of Gaskell's major and lesser-known works. A publisher has
expressed interest in publishing revised versions of the conference papers.

VERB, an interdisciplinary online journal with a newsprint supplement,
is seeking submissions for its Fall 2006 issue. The topic for this
issue is "contagion," broadly defined, which includes (but is not
limited to):

* Disease, sickness, and death, (or theorizing the same).
* The spread of ideas, practices, or perceptions, (or theorizing the same).
* Politics, parasites, or the rapidly-breeding nuisance insects of New
England.
* The communication of ideas, artistic or otherwise.
* Blogs (because no online journal can refuse to discuss blogs).
* Any other item with even a tenuous denotative or connotative
similarity to any definition of "contagion," current or otherwise.

CFP: Restoration Drama (09/15/06; NEMLA, 03/01/07- 03/04/07)

2007 NEMLA (Northeast MLA) convention, Baltimore, Maryland

>From the comedy of manners to the heroic drama, theatre in the latter
part of the 17th century revived with a flourish. This NEMLA
Board-sponsored panel seeks paper proposals (approximately 500 words) on
new critical and theoretical approaches to Restoration and early
18th-century drama. Please include a brief biography and direct queries
and submissions (due date: Sept. 15th, 2006) to Rita Bode by email:
rbode_at_trentu.ca.

Call for articles: The 2006 Sarah Gordon Award of $500 will be
awarded to the best article by a graduate student about
the works of Flannery O'Connor or another southern studies topic.
Any critical approach may be used.

Each entrant must be a graduate student as of 1 Aug. 2006, and
articles must be postmarked by 1 Aug. 2006. Send two copies
of your article (without your name on them) and enclose an SASE
if you want your entry returned. In your cover letter, please provide
complete contact information.

All entries will be considered for publication in the Flannery O'Connor
Review.
Articles should conform to the usual guidelines outlined in the Review.
