Laverne Cox’s debut role in Orange Is The New Black seemed to usher in a new era for trans representation. In 2014, TIME decreed that the “Trans Tipping Point” had arrived and heralded a path to trans acceptance through visibility on the screen. Yet this increase in visibility has not formed an antidote to rampant transphobia. In 2021, thirty-three states have introduced 117 bills to limit and curtail the rights of trans people across the United States. Public incidents of transphobia are on the rise. In this panel, we consider the effects of hypervisibility in a time of public transphobia across media, and critically consider what the task of representation entails.
The Festival Culture Research and Education Network will publish the Journal of Festival Culture Inquiry and Analysis.
This open-access peer-reviewed journal focus on strong and serious submissions that foregrounds inquiry on festival culture that would not necessarily fall under festival culture because of its inter-, multi-, trans- or cross-disciplinary dimension.

Panel Description: While the foundations of positive psychology can be traced back deeply into the twentieth century (Maslow; Fromm; Ryff; Diener), the trend really took off in 1998 with Martin Seligman’s presidential address to the APA. Since then, a wealth of research has explored the salutary effects of positivity, with emphasis on the independent skills one can cultivate to flourish (Duckworth; Seligman; Compton & Hoffman). Over decades of use, this thinking has seeped into our daily lives, with common phrases telling us to “look on the bright side,” “put a smile on,” and “live, laugh, love.”
Due to a high volume of requests, we have extended the Call for Papers deadline until 12 September 2021. For more information on the conference and on potential themes, please visit the dedicated website.

The previous decades have seen the publications of stimulating and ground-breaking works that seek to recuperate and reconsider British women writers of this period. Literary criticism and feminist literary history have celebrated the existence and achievement of women writers, and shown that they were crucial participants in facilitating changes, transitions, and innovations in social and cultural movements, as well as literary styles.

Ben Jonson frequently referred to his literary works as his ‘mind children’ in the paratext accompanying his printed plays, and he movingly reversed the analogy in his commemorative poem “On My First Sonne”: rendering tribute to the deceased child by styling him his father’s “best piece of poetry”. Jonson is associated with a bold renegotiation of authorship in the early modern period, but he was far from alone in turning to procreational metaphors in descriptions of his literary practice. Metaphors of this kind were useful to writers in suggesting a close relationship between author and text and to grapple with the notion of creative innovation vis-à-vis tradition.

Roundtable: Professional Issues around Women, Work and Care
Over the past decade, the media ecology has been dramatically shifting with the advent of online “over-the-top” streaming services, the streaming wars that followed, and the platformization of the web. As the distance between big tech companies and legacy media players rapidly dwindles, rippling effects can be felt across industries, audience practices, regulatory frameworks, and more. Simultaneously, the rise of streaming services also continues to provoke further theorizations on topics that have concerned media scholars for decades regarding the asymmetrical dynamics of power and influence as it relates to globalization processes, representation, identity, politics, cultural and national mediations, and economic development.
