We seek your expertise on the work of James Baldwin for a forthcoming volume entitled The Routledge Companion to James Baldwin. The volume will contain forty articles on this author and his work, and it promises to be the touchstone volume on Baldwin for some time to come. It seeks to be comprehensive in its treatment of Baldwin’s work and seeks to present cutting-edge scholarship on this author. Suggested chapters for the volume are below.
Suggested Chapters for The Routledge Companion to James Baldwin
Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism seeks original, well-researched, and intellectually rigorous essays written from diverse critical perspectives and about texts from any time period or literary tradition.
Submissions should be between 3,000 and 6,000 words (not including the works cited). All submissions should be double-spaced, written in English, and formatted according to the most recent MLA guidelines. Submissions should be uploaded as MS Word files through our website and online submission system (https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/criterion/).
We are now accepting submissions for our Fall 2023 issue.

Scope:
Established in 1968 as a direct result of Black student struggle on campus, the Black Studies Department—now Africana Studies Department— at San Francisco State University was the first Black Studies department in the nation. The establishment of the department also marked the institutionalization Black Studies “as a ‘scientific discipline’ rooted in racial redemption, liberatory scholarship and community revitalization, the discipline of Africana Studies is a body of systematized knowledge, theories, methods, and laws, which are congruent with the African centered paradigm and philosophy.” (Tshaka, 2012, p 29).

A human-animal studies conference at the University of Oulu, 4-6 October 2023
The year 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the Rio Convention on Biological Diversity, and so little has happened that the fourth decade begins with the recent UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) declaration that we are now dealing with an existential crisis. One of the identified root causes of biodiversity loss is said to stem from people’s perceptions of other species – a realm of inquiry addressed widely in human–animal studies and critical animal studies.

The SAMLA 95 Conference - (In)Security: The Future of Literature and Language Studies - will be held from November 9-11, 2023, at the Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel & Conference Center in Atlanta, GA
This panel intends to examine the works of Muslim American poets, novelists, playwrights, jazz musicians, punks, hip hop artists, filmmakers, and visual artists. Papers are invited that explore the diverse compositions of Muslim American identities in cultural texts as they challenge and engage with the canonical codes and sociopolitical norms of national, theoretical, literary, and aesthetic spaces.

Seeking to illuminate an often marginalized space, this Clues theme issue will focus on female detectives who are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color); span eras, genres, and geographical locations; and appear in texts, TV programs, films, and other media. Of particular interest are intersections among race, indigeneity, gender, age, class, or sexuality in these works, as well as projects that center BIPOC authorship and scholarship.

Migration has become a global phenomenon that indicates complexity and diversity. The mobility of people has also influenced how texts are migrated through translation and how it could influence cultural production. Translation, which facilitates “communication, understanding, and action between persons or groups who differ in language and culture” (Bassnett 5), plays a vital role in the migration diaspora. Texts like people, want to seek new opportunities, they search for a new life in a new place and time, as Moira Inghilleri points out in her book entitled Translation and Migration published in 2017, migration is a “continuous becoming”, it “necessitates movement” (1 & 3).

“Ah! How cheerfully we consign ourselves to perdition!” exclaims Ishmael in Melville’s Moby-Dick, lamenting the “universal thump” of work that we tolerate only for the promise of “being paid.” Ishmael makes it clear that work—and its compensation—is full of paradox and contradiction, an ambivalent source of enjoyment and suffering incompletely rationalized by a financial transaction.
Proposals are sought for an edited collection of essays entitled Teens on Screens in the 21st Century, on the representation of teenagers in screen media that have appeared since 2000. The resulting book will be intended for college and graduate students as well as academic libraries, and will be published by an academic press (one has already expressed interest). No single essay should exceed 8,000 words (including notes) and essays in the range of 5,000-7,000 words would be ideal. Citations and references should follow the Chicago Manual of Style.

Modern life has become defined in many ways by our digital experiences, and it is in this technological environment that a retreat to an idealized version of the past has been increasingly realized and depicted through social media. The distinctive aesthetics of cottagecore, dark and light academia, and vintage movements represent creative cross sections through which individuals blend pop culture, literature, fantasy, art, and lifestyle elements in an often fantastical, romanticized, or idealized version of the past—one inherently informed by and expressed through a modern, digital present.
We are soliciting book chapters for a volume under contract with Oxford University Press, The Oxford Handbook of African American Humor Studies.

Proposals on any topic related to Shakespeare are welcome, though we specifically seek proposals that engage with the 2023 MMLA [Midwest Modern Language Association] theme of “Going Public.” What might Shakespeare have to say about democracy, power, and our current political moment? What were Shakespeare’s “publics” and how might they help us think about our current moment? How “democratic” are performances of Shakespeare today and are there models for how to make it more relevant and accessible?
