Pikachu’s Transmedia Adventures: The Continuing Adaptability of the Pokemon Franchise
The conference seeks to explore the narratives of displacement and to demonstrate the validity of a cross-disciplinary approach which brings together the historical, cultural, social and literary expertise in the handling of text. The conference will particularly focus on time and space representations and on treatment of the theme of cultural ambivalence and identity conflict. The subject of displacement will be regarded as both a migration, voluntary or forced, and a sense of being socially or culturally “out of place”.

Through the centuries, humans have often shaped their social life by fictional moments and by taking part in fictional events: carnivals, representations, role plays, society plays, structured and semi-structured collective and singular moments where strictly coded contexts organize specific worlds and cultural dimensions. Play, in its wide acception and in its nature of artificial and coded mechanism, reflects historically the symbolic work by which human societies have elaborated, explained and organized the world.

Margaret Atwood’s Penelopiad, Madeline Miller’s Circe, Natalie Haynes’s A Thousand Ships, Luigi Malerba’s Ithaca Forever, Chigozie Obioma’s An Orchestra of Minorities, and Colm Toibin’s House of Names are just a small sample of contemporary works of literature that engage with and re-tell Classical literature and mythology. Drawing upon ancient subject matters, these new works demonstrate that the Classical tradition remains lively and relevant, even as they pull in new histories, points of view, and contexts.
The 4th World Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities is returning in 2022! Having reviewed the feedback from our attendees, we knew that this event is here to stay. Girlhood Studies, as an academic discipline, is still growing. Since some educational institutions do include girls’ studies as part of a special curriculum, an academic program, a certificate course, a minor, or as part of Women’s Studies or Gender Studies, Girlhood Studies does have a presence in academia although at this stage rarely in an autonomous department. This interest in the pedagogies and practices of teaching Girlhood Studies is an important aspect of its growth as a field of study at university level, at school, and outside of formal academic settings.
Generational Studies is growing as an area of research as multiple generations now co-exist in the workforce. Each generational cohort brings with it diverse viewpoints and varied lived experiences—sometimes quite disparate of one another. Therefore, exploring these age cohorts potentially provides an opportunity to discuss and better understand the challenges of creating cohesiveness as well as discovering the interrelatedness of cultural experiences that have the potential to connect generations.
We welcome papers on topics related to America’s generations including: Baby Boomers, Generation Jones, Generation X, Xennials, Millennials (Gen Y), and iGen (Gen Z).
Young adult (YA) speculative fiction routinely engages with many of life’s most important questions: love, death, relationships, the future of the planet, identity, belonging, and our very future as human beings. Whether styled after the classical bildungsroman or otherwise, coming of age narratives in the speculative genre encourage readers to challenge existing power structures and advocate self-expression and self-confidence. They also return agency to those often divested of power by the institutional and social structures that restrict freedoms based on age, and recenter the adolescent as a critical social figure.
PAMLA's 2021 conference is taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 11-14. There will be both in person and virtual panels at the conference. This Film Studies III session will be virtual and is open to all papers that explore some aspect of film or Film Studies, but we are particularly interested in papers attuned to some facet of the conference theme, "City of God, City of Destruction." Panel: Embodying Horror
Film theorist Linda Williams has identified horror as one of the “body genres” - genres of film characterized by their effect on the body. The language that we use to talk about these films is embedded in our embodied experiences of them: they are spine-tingling, bone-chilling, full of jump scares. Over the last few years, we’ve seen an increase in the number of socially conscious horror films that foreground the body and intersectional embodied identities. In these films, bodies matter; when we watch them, we are invited to interrogate our own embodied response, as well as the bodies on the screen and those behind the camera.
This traditional session welcomes submissions that address questions of intimacy and/or alienation, broadly conceived, in D.H. Lawrence's poetry, short fiction, novels, essays, or other writing. How do Lawrence's texts illuminate or complicate our understanding of our current moment, in which we are both more connected to others than ever while at the same time being forced to keep our physical distance? This session is open to any proposal that explores the intersection of literature and some other art. However, in accordance with the conference theme "City of God, City of Destruction," we welcome papers that explore the cross-sections between literature and the other arts in connection to issues of the urban, cityscapes, the postmodern, noir, gothic, or religious spaces or architecture, or religious or spiritual painting or sculpture.
On behalf of the organising committee, I feel deeply honoured to share with you information on the forthcoming 7th International Conference on Bilingual Education, which will take place either in a face-to-face or hybrid format at the University of Córdoba (Spain) next October 26-29, 2021. The final format will be announced in late June or early July.

Scoring Peak TV: Music and Sound in Television’s New ‘Golden Age’
We invite abstracts proposing contributions to a project led by Dr Steve Halfyard (RCS) and Prof. Nicholas Reyland (RNCM). The project will involve two phases of work: a conference/workshop (to be held in 2022, location and medium tbc.) and an essay collection co-edited by Halfyard and Reyland (to be submitted end 2023).
Horror films have long held a place in cinematic history as an expression of the monstrous, the un-nameable, and the unknown. They are a powerful point of catharsis in which viewers see their deepest fears played out onscreen, whether the threat is fully embodied or less concretely defined. As a result, grief and loss have always figured heavily in this genre.
