Resources for American Literary Study, a journal of archival and bibliographical scholarship in American literature, invites submissions for our upcoming 2021 double issue. Covering all periods of American literature, RALS welcomes both traditional and digital approaches to archival and bibliographical analysis. 

Founded in 1971, RALS remains the only major scholarly periodical of its kind. Each issue includes, in addition to archival and bibliographical research, related book reviews and a unique “Prospects” essay that identifies new directions in the study of major authors. Our editorial board consists of leading scholars from an array of fields and subfields in American literary study.

Utopic Identity and Liminality in African American Literature

This panel seeks presentations about the proclivity of African American racial space. That is, this panel is interested in when and where conceptions of spatial race formalities are conducted. We can think of “space” as time, place, and movement—the constant liminal changing of identities. This panel invites abstracts, of no more than 250 words, for presentations on African American literature at the Midwest Modern Language Association conference. Some topics might include:

Conference Overview

Marginalized groups may be contrary to the dominant culture within a society through their very own existence. In cultures where those who reinforce divisions may seek to ostracize the Other by portraying them in a negative light, counter-hegemonic representations of the marginalized can be revolutionary. This panel will examine how non-dominant cultures in contemporary literature are depicted in the context of the dominant. 

Central questions include:

• What makes something (e.g. an action, a person's/group's identity) within a dominant culture subversive?

• What are the benefits and repercussions of acting against the collective conscience?

Our interdisciplinary conference is intended as a fitting opportunity for this reflection.

Piotr Alekseevich Kropotkin (1842-1921) was one of the most prominent advocates of anarchism during his adult life, but also a famous intellectual and activist in Europe and further afield. In this centenary year of his death, we welcome you to join us for a discussion about his legacy, influence and relevance today. This conference will discuss his life and his work, but also his afterlife. Since February 1921, the world has lived without Kropotkin, but in many ways his ideas and his legacy persist. This conference seeks to specify, debate, contest, and carry on that legacy.
