Disseminating knowledge in Seventeenth Century:
Centres and peripheries in the Republic of Letters

One of the main features of modernity is the constitution of what has bee=
n called the Republic of Letters: a complex of communities, societies, co=
rrespondence networks, formal or informal circles of learned individuals =
throughout Europe, often involved in common projects of reforming the rec=
eived knowledge.

Intersections of race and textual scholarship: drawing on what James
Weldon Johnson termed the "dilemma" of the "double audience," this panel
will investigate the ways in which textual and African Americanist
scholarship inform each other. Papers might explore such topics as:
decisions concerning the presentation of particular texts;
authenticating paratexts for slave and other narratives; book-form
republication of works previously published in serial form only for
black-owned periodicals; issues of archival preservation; questions of
canonization; "packaging" and repackaging of "Negro-authored" texts;
dissemination of texts that originally had a strong performative

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
REDISCOVERING POLISH CINEMA: HISTORY – IDEOLOGY – POLITICS

TO BE HELD 23-25 OCTOBER 2006 IN LODZ (POLAND)

Various transformations in the social and cultural landscape have been
reshaping the way Polish cinema is understood, yet still there is little
clarity about its position within the area of politics and ideology. The
central theme of the conference addresses issues arising from these complex
relations in both the past and the present of Polish cinema.

Transformations explores and promotes inclusive pedagogy and curriculum
transformation. Representing a variety of cross-disciplinary interests,
both theoretical and practical, the journal is designed to create a dynamic
exchange among diverse scholars. A variety of approaches, from theoretical
essays to short descriptions of pedagogical innovations, will assist
teachers and scholars at all levels who are committed to integrating recent
scholarship on gender, race/ ethnicity, class, sexuality, and other identity
