*De/Construction of Ethnicity and Nationhood in the Age of Globalization*

The age of globalization has witnessed a redefinition of ethnicity as
well as the (re)emergence of nationhood, while at the same time
witnessing the deconstruction of both. Bi-, multi- and poly-cultural
societies more than ever have to confront issues generated from such
efforts, which aim at shaping and reshaping identities. While current
political developments exacerbate such phenomena, pacts of forgetting
and other silent alliances that had been established during the Cold War
as well as post- and neo-colonial paradigms are now being interrogated
and challenged.

Globalization is by many accounts the central crisis of our age. And in the
wake of postcolonial studies and the events of 9/11, literary studies has
made a definitive 'global turn.' But we have still only begun to examine the
myriad effects of globalization upon literary texts (broadly defined to
include prose fiction and non-fiction, drama, poetry, film, electronic
texts, and popular culture in all its forms).

 proposals from historical and contemporary perspectives.

CFP: HBO and Lacan (10/10/06; Narrative '07)

Papers are invited for a proposed panel on HBO and Lacan for the 2007 Society
for the Study of Narrative Literature conference (March 15-18). Lacanian
readings are sought that engage and illuminate such programs as Deadwood, Big
Love, Rome, Carnivale, Epitafos, The Sopranos, Oz, Six Feet Under, Sex and
the City, Entourage, and Curb Your Enthusiasm; particularly welcome are
papers that represent innovative encounters with Lacanian thought as well.

(Queries are welcome regarding programs other than those listed above, or
papers taking an alternative approach to that suggested here.)

We have extended the deadline for submissions to the panel on critique,
resistance and collaboration. The new deadline is Sept. 2, 2006.

This panel session will address how historical, cultural, and personal traumas haunt Asian American authors, characters, and narrative structures. Furthermore, how do historical traumas manifest themselves in Asian American literary narratives and through bodies in literature? Why are historical traumas and personal/sexual/bodily traumas so often simultaneously narrated in Asian American literature? Is this phenomenon of trauma 'haunting' the present experienced differently by male and female Asian American characters? How can we expand the field of trauma studies by focusing specifically on the 'working-out' of trauma in Asian American literature?
