The terms "literature" and "visual art" are traditionally
associated with high culture, but they should probably
be uncapitalized for this conference, where we encourage
discussion of work on the margins of these categories.
Often there are presentations on book illustrations, but
recently the trend of presentations has turned to literature/
film crossovers (as in BRIDE AND PREDJUDICE and
MACBOOL) and even comic books (the SPIDER-MAN:
INDIA series). We have had presentations on novels

I am seeking submissions for an essay collection on disability in the
Middle Ages. The goals of this book are not only to broaden our
knowledge of medieval disabilities and the representations of these
disabilities but also to demonstrate the ways in which the modern field
of Disability Studies can inform the work of medievalists. As such, I
welcome essays from any field of study, but each submission should show
some awareness of current findings in Disability Studies to complement
its analysis of the medieval world. Topics may include, but are
certainly not limited to, depictions of disability in medieval
literature, historical analyses, theoretical inquiries, etc. I will be

the South West of England. Long an area with distinctive maritime, military,
ethnic and cultural connections to North America, the South West also contains
a number of HE institutions with well-established American Studies programmes

the region to present their current work, and to explore areas of potential
cross-institutional collaboration. The day will include an open-forum
discussion on the future of the discipline in UK Higher Education
Paper proposals are requested for a one-day regional American Studies

"INFOTAINMENT" IN THE UNITED STATES BEFORE 1980
This panel seeks papers on infotainment programs in the United States
before 1980 (essentially, before the launch of CNN in 1980 and MTV in 1981).
We shall use a broad conception of infotainment that includes
newspaper, magazine and other modes of textual nonfiction, and radio,
film, and both "Golden Age" and post-"Golden Age" television.
