International Workshop: Decolonising Utopia? Literary, Cultural and Theoretical Perspectives

5-6 February, Department of English Studies, University of Cyprus

Storyworlds is an interdisciplinary journal of narrative studies. We publish cutting-edge research on storytelling practices across times, cultures, and media. The journal foregrounds research questions that cut across established disciplines and seeks to promote the understanding of narrative and storytelling as worldmaking—and worldbreaking—practices.

We currently have a number of books available or forthcoming for review.

This peer-reviewed fast-track collection seeks to publish innovative approaches to teaching Aphra Behn’s work, building on existing critical and pedagogical scholarship.

We do invite essays on Behn’s most-taught work, Oroonoko, but we aim particularly to give sustained attention to the full range of her literary life, and are especially interested in proposals about works that have been shown to be amenable to modern undergraduate teaching: the plays, the shorter fiction, the poems.

Postcolonial Interventions invites scholarly articles for the January 2027 issue on the theme of Popular Culture and the Rise of the Right.

This is the second call for papers for the edited volume tentatively titled ‘Visual Propaganda in an Era of Instability’. Based on distinct case studies explored in a wide range of book chapters, the main objective of the volume is to analyse the role of the image in driving public opinion and perception. The first call for papers generated a strong response and resulted in a number of high-quality contributions. During the review process, however, it became clear that several important dimensions of contemporary visual propaganda remained underrepresented. To address these gaps, we are issuing a second call for papers and expanding the historical timeframe under consideration from 2020 onwards to 2014 onwards.

The Military Gaze: War, Intelligence and Security on Twenty-First-Century Screens

Three decades on, the founding categories of trauma theory: belatedness, aporia, the unspeakable, the event that cannot be claimed, remain largely those of a single archive: European, modernist, post-Holocaust. Stef Craps’s decolonising critique (2010; 2013; 2014) has exposed the field’s marginalisation of non-Western suffering, its universalisation of a Euro-American psycho-diagnostic invention, its prescription of fragmentary modernist techniques as its defining form, and its neglect of the connections between metropolitan and other histories of violence. Yet that critique has been prosecuted largely through postcolonial and Anglophone Global South materials.

Biomythographies: Self-Fabulation in the Time of Autotheory

We seek submissions on unruly (re)readings of the medieval that drive a wedge into Derrida's

conception of differánce between the signifier and signified of the sign. Various modern media

types, including but not limited to literature, film, television, animation, TTRPGs, video game RPGS,

comics and graphic novels, podcasts, etc., offer an array of opportunities for exploring what we

make of the "medieval" and why. We are interested in work that engages more than

traditional examples of medievalism, especially that which might speak for or represent

perspectives traditionally deemed "unruly." Under-represented paradigms encouraged!

The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for its 2027–2028 research fellowship program. Up to 50 fellowships will be awarded to support projects that require substantial on-site use of the center’s internationally renowned collections in the humanities.

Fellowships are open to graduate students, current and former academic faculty at any career stage, and independent researchers — including journalists and artists — whose work engages deeply with archival materials. Residency lengths range from one week to two months, with stipends provided to support travel and research.

Social Inclusion, peer-reviewed journal indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index and Scopus, welcomes new and exciting research papers for its upcoming issue "Legal Perspectives on Balancing Life and Work in the 21st Century," edited by Melanie Hack (University of Bergen) and Lisa Waddington (University of Maastricht).

• Submission of Abstracts: 1-15 December 2026
• Submission of Full Papers: 1-15 May 2027
• Publication of the Issue: June/December 2027

About the issue:

In Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV throws down a gauntlet: “When
human dignity is threatened by new forms of dehumanization, ours is the pressing duty to remain
profoundly human.” What does it mean to remain “profoundly human” in a technological society?
Are any of the advancements that we have come to perceive as essential to western standards of living
at odds with human flourishing? What are the implications, benefits, and costs of the relationship
between humanity and technology? The Braniff Graduate Student Association (BGSA) invites
undergraduate students in all liberal arts disciplines to consider these questions at the Braniff
Undergraduate Conference in the Liberal Arts (BUCLA) on February 5-6, 2027.

We are open to multiple gateways, literary and interdisciplinary, to War Literature and Trauma Studies.

As mass movements and resistance struggles from Reconstruction and Indigenous sovereignty through women’s liberation and civil rights activism make clear, American history has been indelibly shaped by divergent, contradictory, and deeply contested understandings of a common political language centered on “freedom.”  Far from a static, settled, or predetermined concept, Eric Foner contends that “freedom” has proved “a terrain of conflict, open to very different and sometimes contradictory interpretations.” The story of the United States is, in no small part, a contest over what it means to be free.

The Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature invites essay proposals for a forthcoming issue of the peer-reviewed journal Midwestern Miscellany on the topic of Comics and the Midwest, to be guest-edited by Rachael Price (rprice@abac.edu), Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

The American Midwest has served as a key locale in comics and graphic novels, both as a setting for some of the most famous stories in this format and as an important center of newspaper and comic-book publishing. This volume seeks to explore the importance of the Midwest in comic strips, comic books, and graphic novels, from the early twentieth century to the present. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

Organised by University College Dublin and AMPS this conference explores how towns, cities and regions can  respond to climate change, social challenges and urban transformation. Bringing together architecture, planning, sustainability, conservation, public health and community perspectives it is explicitly interdisciplinary and explores practical, critical and conceptual approaches to creating more resilient, inclusive, healthy and livable places.

Dublin itself provides a compelling setting for the event, combining historic neighbourhoods, Georgian architecture, modernist housing, docklands regeneration, expanding transport, diverse cultural history and sometimes contentious community issues.
