Proposed special session title:
Collectors and Collecting in American Literature

A call for papers addressing representations of collectors and collecting
in American literature, directing attention to the ways in which
collecting intersects with and articulates attitudes toward social class,
high/low culture, and consumerism and/or is shaped by region,
race-ethnicity, gender and other significant cultural contexts.

The Ambrose Bierce Project (http://www.ambrosebierce.org) is a hypermedia project and peer-reviewed e-journal hosted by Penn State University. To prepare for the second issue of the journal (fall 2006), we are now seeking essays and literary briefs about the writings of Ambrose Bierce and his contemporaries. Submissions will be reviewed by members of the ABP advisory board, a collection of leading Bierce scholars and Americanists.
 
Literary briefs will offer a critical perspective on a *single* Bierce story or work of nonfiction prose. Briefs should not exceed 2,000 words, but should include scholarly notes. Deadline: 5/1/06.

Short Story: "Narrative Innovation in the Short Story." Papers on
second-person narration, reverse chronology, dead narrators, animals as
narrators--or any other innovation in narrator or narrative form. Please

American Food Icons: If you are interested in food and imagination, please
submit a proposal on the theme of a single American food icon in literature
and the arts. Panel will convene at the Association for the Study of Food
and Society (ASFS) conference in Boston, June 7-11, 2006. Sorry, but corn
and apples are spoken for. Queries welcome. Please send an abstract of 250

we would like to invite you to our international and interdisciplinary
conference on "HipHop meets Academia", organized by Chemnitz University
of Technology, Germany and splash!, Europe's largest hiphop festival.

We are looking for practicioners and scholars who would like to present
their latest findings in research and lived youth culture. Since you
have worked in this field, we would kindly ask you for contributing to
our conference by submitting an abstract by April 15, 2006. You can

Twenty years after the term "postmodernism" became common currency in
analyses of contemporary literature, architecture, visual arts,
philosophy and popular culture, we still find the editor of the recent
Cambridge Companion to Postmodernism (2004) lamenting "the strange
absence of a mature postmodernist discourse within music studies," and
suggesting that "the relative conservatism and autonomy of the world of
academic music study may account for its long resistance to
postmodernist formulations and arguments."
