MEMEFEST 2004: COMMUNICATIONS AND SOCIOLOGY
AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

Memefest, the international festival of radical communications, invites
undergraduate and graduate students in Communications Studies and
Sociology to look back to the dawn of the Information Age and respond to
the article, "Cyberwar is Coming." Penned in 1993 for the RAND
Corporation, this article coins terms like Cyberwar and Netwar and makes
predictions about how information will be used to sway public opinion,
pressure governments and corporations, and even wage war.

"Africa in India, India in Africa." Among the topics to be addressed
in this collection of essays will be the following: The Siddhis of
Gujarat, and contemporary interaction between African nations and south
Asia; The two waves of Indians to Africa; subsequent migration from and
within Africa in the 20th century; West Indian migration to Britain and
interaction with African immigrants in Britain; West Indian migration to
the US, and interaction with African Americans; Self-representations and
objectification by others in film, fiction, drama, etc.; Political and
economic interaction among local and immigrant communities. On a
broader theoretical plane, this collection of essays seeks 1) to address

SCHREINER UNIVERSITY IS NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FOR THE SECOND ISSUE OF
ILLUMINATIONS: AN UNDERGRADUATE LITERARY E-JOURNAL.

Illuminations, a peer-reviewed international literary e-journal, offers
undergraduate students an opportunity to publish works both critical and
creative. Submissions will be refereed by a panel of three undergraduate
students.

How can literary theory inform community based learning/service
learning? Or vice versa, how does community service transform our
assumptions about literature and the literary aspects of everyday
life? In what ways do current readings in cultural studies extend to
the question of civitas? We are seeking submissions [essays,
narratives, reflections, position papers] for a edited volume on the
interrelationship between literary studies and community-based
learning. We would like to include examples of classroom projects,
reflections on practice, theoretical pieces and close readings.

are often first conceptualized in psychoanalytical terms. In the case of =

sexual identity opens the door to a second paradigm of analysis: the =
nation and the allegory. Femininity, masculinity, homosociality and =
homosexuality then become fertile ground for the allegorization of the =
national and the national identity around the sexual and sexual =
politics.
