How do medieval texts and artistic traditions conceptualize peace, forgiveness, mediation, and reconciliation? This virtual session invites papers exploring the representation of conflict resolution across literary, visual, religious, legal, and historical materials from the medieval world.
Contributions may examine emotional, political, spiritual, or communal dimensions of reconciliation, as well as tensions between violence and peace-making in narrative and artistic forms. Comparative and interdisciplinary approaches are especially welcome.

We invite proposals that examine practical applications of AI in teaching and learning, including but not limited to:
As Artificial Intelligence becomes an integral part of higher education, AI literacy is increasingly recognized as a foundational competency for students, educators, researchers, and institutions. This seminar explores the knowledge, skills, values, and ethical considerations required for responsible and effective engagement with AI in academic contexts.
Guided by the UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Teachers and informed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this seminar invites proposals addressing topics including, but not limited to:
Due to the rhetorical challenges of sharing the unmentionable, infertility is often underdiscussed in both Early Modern society and today. It has discomforted and continues to discomfort theologians, medical practitioners, politicians, scholars, and everyday people trying to build identities through societies deeply founded on the structure of the family. The very concept of family is built around parents and children–what happens when a couple is childless, what happens when the children aren’t materially seen, only known to the parents that lost them before birth? It has historically forced thinkers to grapple with their understanding of life and death, grace and agency, reality and the supernatural.

Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway (1925) remains a cornerstone of the modernist literary canon. Often celebrated as Woolf’s greatest novel, the plot is set in post-World War I London and revolves around a single day in the life of its protagonist, Mrs Clarissa Dalloway, as she prepares to host an evening party. Beneath its seemingly simple plot, the novel exemplifies a profound exploration of consciousness, time, and the inner lives of characters through its extensive use of the stream-of-consciousness technique. Although narrated in a third-person omniscient voice, the narrative primarily focuses on the inner consciousness of the characters.

In 1996, Carl Sagan warned us of a time when people would lose their ability to question, “when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few . . . when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.” Maybe Mr Sagan was somewhat pessimistic when writing The Demon-Haunted World. But then again, in times of conspiracy theories, Ancient Aliens, Antivaxxers, and Holocaust Deniers, the Age of Information appears just as capable of spreading dangerous frauds and charlatans as it is of disseminating reliable scholarship.

How to Be a Global Humanist begins with the tension built into its title. The humanities, as an academic field, emerged through Western histories of learning and the institutions that made those histories legible as scholarship. Yet the practices gathered under that name exceed that narrow genealogy. Across the world, people have made meaning from language and image. They have preserved the past, taught inherited forms of wisdom, and argued over what human life is for. Such work does not need the construct of “the humanities” to authorize it. The better question is what the category reveals about the traditions it encounters, and what it renders difficult to see.

Panel on Bill Lawrence for SCMS 2027 Since Spin City, the shows of Bill Lawrence have navigated the complexities of workplaces, friendships, grief and family. This panel intends to explore the Bill Lawrence universe from a diverse range of angles, with the overarching aim of seeing the series as part of a collective body of work. This panel invites contributions that examine how food and foodways shape and reflect cultural knowledge across time and place, with particular attention to the relationships among foodways, memory, migration, identity, cultural heritage, and community formation.
Where and how does African American culture begin?
Every story has a beginning, yet every beginning is a choice: a conscious decision about where, when, and how to start. Beginnings are contextual constructions as are endings.
A few months into his second term, President Trump announced he would order a new census that excludes non-citizens. This unprecedented move in U.S. history threatened to erase millions of people from the map. It would reshape electoral outcomes, going against the 14th Amendment that requires counting all persons in each state to determine representation, and it could impact public policymaking by removing crucial data for infrastructure, health, or education.
Childhood is often imagined as a period of innocence, protection, and dependence. However, across many historical and contemporary contexts, children experience various forms of violence, including interpersonal abuse, structural inequality, displacement, war, and environmental harm. Recent scholarship in childhood studies has challenged the tendency to view children solely as vulnerable victims, emphasizing their capacity for agency, resilience, and political engagement. Understanding how cultural narratives represent these experiences is essential for examining broader questions of justice, rights, and social belonging.
Following the lead of activist and disabled writer Alice Wong, this panel “creates a
dialogue” and is, of itself, “an intimate act bringing us together across space and time”
(Disability Intimacy xx). It therefore invites papers engaged in the long genealogy of literary,
visual, and historical representations of a frequently overlooked, or gainsayed, symbiosis: that is,
between intimacy, broadly defined, and the disabled or “defective” bodymind in the early
modern archive. This might include considering how disability sparks desire, enhances pleasure,

Past and present, the Pacific Northwest has functioned in literature as a dynamic space defined by transition, ecological precarity, and socio-political friction. This panel explores writers of fiction, poetry, memoir, and non-fiction whose work investigates the unique sense of place, history, and culture defining the region. We welcome papers that engage with the tensions between industry and preservation, indigenous sovereignty, labor movements, and the mythologies of the western wilderness.

This panel session seeks to explore the cultural fascination surrounding "The Backrooms," an internet 'creepypasta' about an abandoned office building with endless corridors that became a popular YouTube series and most recently, a blockbuster horror film. What are the Backrooms? Do they represent an artificial or alien intelligence attempting to simulate reality? Are they a glitch in the imperfect fabric of an unstable universe? Are they a metaphor for the subconscious, techno-paranoia, wasteland necrocapitalism, corporate control, or the internet itself? Or is this all just a retelling of the Greek myth of the Labyrinth for a Gen Z audience?
Resurgens Theatre Company, along with the Georgia State University Department of English, is pleased to announce our fourth biennial conference on early modern verse drama by Shakespeare and his contemporaries, “Shakespeare’s Apocrypha Now.” We’re calling for papers that examine some aspect of Shakespeare’s non-canonical plays, i.e., those dramatic works that have been or are currently attributed to Shakespeare (as a whole or in part) that have yet to receive widespread scholarly and/or theatrical recognition. We particularly welcome topics on canonicity, collaboration, and performance-oriented concerns regarding Renaissance drama and/or early modern print culture.
