Session Title: "Sex, Secularism and Enlightenment"

In <Formations of the Secular>, Talal Asad has described secularism as a
political ideology that took shape in the nineteenth century, based on the
concept of "the secular" that coalesced in early modernity and the
eighteenth century. What role did sex and gender play in this
conceptualization of the secular, in religious and non-religious texts and
identities? What are the sexualized components of a secular identity or
subjectivity? How do they impact the transformation of religious
identities in the period?

The Science Fiction Literature & Theory Division of the International
Association of the Fantastic in the Arts would like to invite paper and
session proposals for the 27th Annual International Conference in Florida.

The 2006 theme is "Drawn by the Fantastic: Comics, Graphic Novels, Art &
Literature"

The SF Division focuses on all aspects of science fiction literature,
history, and theory. Archival, historical, critical, and theoretical
approaches are equally welcome.

American Art and Architecture Call for Papers

PCA/ACA National Convention

Atlanta 2006

The Art and Architecture Area of the American Culture Association

is seeking proposals for papers for the PCA/ACA Annual Conference

in Atlanta, April 12 to 15, 2006.

Any aspect of American Visual Culture will be considered. Open Sessions are

scheduled along with Theme Sessions.

Proposals for papers for three and four person panels on any topic related to Art and Architecture in North America may be submitted by e-mail to either the A&A Area Chair or to the Theme Session Chairs noted below.

We are very pleased that the Society for the Study of the History of the English Language (SSHEL) will be sponsoring two sessions at the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo next year (May 4-7, 2006).

1. Regular Session: "Multilingualism: Linguistic, Historical, Cultural, and Literary Approaches." This session aims to explore links between multilingualism, cultural practices, and social identities in medieval England. We invite papers that combine methods in linguistics or language studies with methods in literary theory or cultural studies in order to investigate multilingualism and its links to gender/sexuality, community or nation in medieval England.
