18th SAAS Conference “Negotiating Identity and Power: Resistance, Rebellion, and Resilience in U.S. Literature and Culture” (Universidad de Oviedo, March 15-17, 2027)
PANEL: Queer Bounds: Circulating Affects in Contemporary Ethnic US Literature
CHAIRS: Paula Barba Guerrero & Beatriz Hermida Ramos (Universidad de Salamanca)
Abstract
This seminar proposes to examine Italian and Italian American food studies through the comparative frameworks of transnational circulation, intermedial representation, and cultural translation. Rather than approaching food as a stable marker of heritage or authenticity, the seminar treats it as a mobile signifying practice through which texts, images, commodities, and affects travel across linguistic, national, and medial boundaries. Food thus becomes a privileged comparative object: it links literature to film, advertising to visual culture, and national discourse to diasporic rearticulation.
“Shit Matters: The Politics and Poetics of Faecality in Anglophone Postcolonial and Decolonial Literatures and Arts”
University of Lille, 29–30 April, 2027 Confirmed Keynote Speaker: Pr. Stephanie Newell (Yale University)
John Steinbeck once remarked that fellow-Californian Robinson Jeffers wrote some the “greatest poetry since Whitman.” Steinbeck kept a significant collection of Jeffers work both in his personal library and Ed Ricketts’ Lab, where Jeffers was an influential topic in their endlessly varied conversations. When asked about possibility of meeting the poet, Steinbeck declined with a telling degree of reverence: “His poetry is perfect to me, and I don’t think one should get the man mixed up with his work.” Although they did eventually meet—notably when Steinbeck lived in Monterey in 1944—their relationship was one of distant, though friendly, mutual respect.

In a footnote in What Is Philosophy? (1991/2009), Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari write that François Laruelle “is engaged in one of the most interesting undertakings of contemporary philosophy” (220). Referencing Laruelle’s Philosophy and Non-Philosophy (1989/2013), they continue that Laruelle “invokes a One-All that he qualifies as ‘nonphilosophical’ and, oddly, as ‘scientific,’ on which the ‘philosophical decision’ takes root” (220). They conclude that “this One-All seems to be close to Spinoza” (220).
Graphic Narratives has become part of an expanding literary field, absorbing and redirecting the ideological, formal, and creative energies of contemporary fiction.

Punk has never stayed where it was put. Emerging from the economic, political and cultural upheavals of the 1970s, punk became music, style, attitude, subculture, political language and cultural mythology. From London, New York, Sydney, Belfast, Berlin, Tokyo and Jakarta, punk travelled rapidly while taking radically different local forms. It transformed music and fashion, challenged conventions of gender and sexuality, generated distinctive visual and material cultures, and provided a language through which alienation, anger, resistance and belonging could be expressed.
At many universities, learning communities foster connectedness and belonging among students. Learning communities are typically composed of cohorts of students taking aligned first-year classes, but they take many other forms as well. At their best, they promote the perspective that learning is a collective activity in which knowledge is constructed through relationships with peers, professors, and communities, bringing together diverse voices and interdisciplinary perspectives. They provide a welcoming environment that eases the transition to college and provides a foundation for a peer network of academic support (Schreiber & Valle, 2013).
The Evelyn Scott Society invites abstracts of 1-2 pages on the American writer Evelyn Scott (1893-1963).
Papers may focus on any of her works (novels, memoirs, poetry, young adult literature) and take any contemporary critical approach. We are especially interested in papers investigating the canonicity process, the literary networks to which Scott belonged, or the role of disability in her career, but all topics will be considered. Scott participated in various and major literary currents during her writing life, including Imagism, naturalism, and modernism,. She had a variety of literary mentors, including Lola Ridge, Theodore Dreiser, Waldo Frank, William Carlos Williams, Emma Goldman, and Jean Rhys, among others.
JAm It! Journal of American Studies in Italy invites submissions for its 2027 issue (no. 12). This open call welcomes contributions on any topic within the purview of American Studies, with no thematic restrictions.
This panel seeks papers that interrogate Asian American injury as a recurring motif and rhetoric in literature and media. Recent Asian American scholarship and aesthetic/cultural production have promoted the political utility of minor affects (Sianne Ngai, Cathy Park Hong), new discourses and praxes of collectivity and community (“cut fruit diaspora”; the emergence of “Wasia” and “Wasian meetups”), and sentimental identification through commodities and commodification in the current moment of late-stage capitalism (Crying in HMart; Ocean Vuong’s inclusion in Oprah’s Book Club).
Silences as Resistance in Public Narratives
Silence is generally seen as something to surmount: we break silence; we give voice to silenced stories; we speak out against injustice. But silence can be a powerful mode of expression in its own right. There is a history of silent protest. Silence can reject dominant expectations or refuse to offer up a story for voyeurism, appropriation, or commodification. It can push reader-listeners to listen for something wordless, to play an active role in striving to understand, and simultaneously to recognize the limits of their ability to understand another person’s trauma. Silence is rarely ever singular.

For the 2027 conference the HFRN will engage in scholarly discussions on the topic of ‘Power and Politics in Historical Fictions’
The 2027 conference in Amsterdam will continue to critically interrogate one of HFRN’s longstanding lines of enquiry: that historical fictions are anything but a banal engagement with the past, but explicitly and implicitly shape and propel political claims, identities and agendas.

In an environment of increasing digital distraction, courses exploring nineteenth-century literature and culture ask students to engage with some of literature’s lengthiest texts. How can we encourage meaningful engagement with nineteenth century “loose, baggy monsters” in today’s university? What resources can we call upon to better engage our students and support their learning in light of the rise of AI and the challenges of online distraction?
For this panel, participants will share a 5-10-minute presentation and include discussion of a specific working assignment, assessment strategy, experiential learning opportunity, or in-class activity.
Romanticism, in its many cultural manifestations, oftentimes clearly draws the line between the subject and the object, or the speaker and the spoken for. Within the cultural cannon in Spain and Latin America, Romanticism has been used to project narrow—frequently problematic—visions of cultures and communities either within a nation, or to a broader, international public. But, could there be more below the surface than what initially meets the eye in these Romantic works? Through this panel, presenters are invited to reconsider cultural products that have been deemed Romantic (including Proto-Romanticism and Residual Romanticism) and the visions of community that they construct and/or deconstruct.

Concept Note
Since the widespread emergence of Generative AI a few years ago, educators across disciplines have been reconsidering how technology shapes teaching, learning, writing, and assessment. While some departments and faculty have leaned into these new Large Language Models and the technological "advances" they offer, others have worked just as diligently to keep AI out of their classrooms.
