Teaching the Nineteenth Century in Today's University

Northeast Modern Language Association
deadline for submissions:
Wednesday, September 30, 2026

In an environment of increasing digital distraction, courses exploring nineteenth-century literature and culture ask students to engage with some of literature’s lengthiest texts. How can we encourage meaningful engagement with nineteenth century “loose, baggy monsters” in today’s university? What resources can we call upon to better engage our students and support their learning in light of the rise of AI and the challenges of online distraction?

For this panel, participants will share a 5-10-minute presentation and include discussion of a specific working assignment, assessment strategy, experiential learning opportunity, or in-class activity.

Reconsidering Romanticism in Spain and Latin America

NeMLA
deadline for submissions:
Wednesday, September 30, 2026

Romanticism, in its many cultural manifestations, oftentimes clearly draws the line between the subject and the object, or the speaker and the spoken for. Within the cultural cannon in Spain and Latin America, Romanticism has been used to project narrow—frequently problematic—visions of cultures and communities either within a nation, or to a broader, international public. But, could there be more below the surface than what initially meets the eye in these Romantic works? Through this panel, presenters are invited to reconsider cultural products that have been deemed Romantic (including Proto-Romanticism and Residual Romanticism) and the visions of community that they construct and/or deconstruct.

Proposed Volume: Teaching without GenAI in the Age of AI

University of North Texas

Thursday, October 15, 2026

Since the widespread emergence of Generative AI a few years ago, educators across disciplines have been reconsidering how technology shapes teaching, learning, writing, and assessment. While some departments and faculty have leaned into these new Large Language Models and the technological "advances" they offer, others have worked just as diligently to keep AI out of their classrooms.

Constructing Meaningful Ecologies of Material Culture

Language, Literature, and Interdisciplinary Studies
deadline for submissions:
Monday, November 30, 2026

“Culture,” notes Raymond Williams, “is one of the two or three most complicated words in the English language” (87). Its etymological root in cultivation—the tending and propagation of life—signals a resistance to being contained. Classroom pedagogy encompasses various elements into it—mythology, rituals, religion, tradition; movies, songs, literature; fashion, food, art—classifying it as ‘a whole way of life.’ Yet, culture surpasses being merely a way of life; it represents a way of understanding life and saturating existence with meaning. In the 19th Century, Matthew Arnold viewed culture as a framework supporting liberal humanist ideology, which aimed to prescribe a universal definition of excellence.

In Spring of 2026, the first stage of NASA’s Artemis mission captured photographs of the Earth from space, a collective earthling selfie that momentarily transcended the squalor and congestion of the daily news cycle. While satellite imagery, Google maps, and weather forecasting technology have made representations of the global scale relatively commonplace, the astronaut photos have a human presence that allows them to capture something of the sublimity of what it means to live on a planet.

Poetry and Pop

This seminar will convene a chorus of new approaches to the study of poetry and global pop music, sister arts dynamized by dizzying asymmetries. Where and when they are practiced as distinct or differently mediated forms of cultural expression, poetry and popular song are linked by histories both long and recent, by subject matter, by patterns of figural and prosodic design, and by their shared claims to those effects some call “lyric.” At the same time, the trajectories of literary modernism and commercial music refract this common ground beyond recognition. In 1939, Clement Greenberg could decry a self-evident chasm of cultural difference between “a poem by T. S.

Punishment and Privilege: The Cinema of Peter Watkins

2026 American Comparative Literature Association Conference
deadline for submissions:
Tuesday, September 22, 2026

By the time he passed away at the age of 90, British filmmaker Peter Watkins had cemented his legacy as one of the preeminent media scholars of the late-20th and early 21st centuries. Over the course of eight decades, Watkins’ oeuvre represented unrelenting interventions in an industry that was repeatedly acquiescing to the profit motive. Among the themes explored in the director’s work are war (The War Game) and revolution (La Commune). Within these films, his most common approach was the pseudo-documentary. This format helped Watkins combat what he viewed as the passivity that was the dominant mode of discourse in media.

Medieval and Early Modern People and their Things

People perceive the world and their place in it through interacting with objects. Through these subject-object relationships, people experience the potential of materials, both naturally sourced and manmade, as physical resources that can be perceived. A number of concerns arise with the use of these materials amidst acts of meaning-making. How do people use subject-object relationships in negotiating their treatment of objects to define their world views? To innovate new ways of engaging with and replicating the world around them? And how does that process continue to influence how we create future realities for ourselves and others?
