Session Title: American Literature After 1865

Survivor paradigms through which literatures of trauma are read often presume a stable self that can be recovered. How and what does a postmodern subject survive, and is recovery possible or desired? How is selfhood in dialogue with culture in moments of crisis? The devastation in our Gulf Coast invites us to consider existing theories of the survivor and to contemplate new approaches that acknowledge elements of postmodern culture.

Theoretical essays and readings of specific texts/events/experiences are welcome for this SAMLA special session. Memoirs and autobiography must be in dialogue with critical discourse.

Where do these retellings remain faithful and how do they depart from the original stories? What does this suggest about motifs and topologies? These and other similar questions are the focus of the Visual Studies panel.

session welcomes submissions on any aspect of computer-assisted
instruction, humanities computing, electronic literacy, or related
topic. Please send papers or 500-word abstract to session chair Tom

CFP: Technical Communication Session at SCMLA 2006

We are asking that 500 word abstracts be written about any topic
concerning Technical Communication. Even though we are accepting any
topic involving Technical Communication, we would especially like to
have proposals concerning International Technical Communication in
order to fit the theme of the conference. Some topics ideas include:
teaching ITC, translation, cross cultural communication and
experiences, and/or research. SCMLA Conference will be in Fort Worth,
Texas October 26-28, 2006.
