Women's writing emerged as a critical category in response to the historical exclusion of women from literary canons and archives. The recovery of neglected texts, authors, and traditions has transformed literary studies, creating new genealogies of reading and interpretation. Yet the category itself raises important questions. Does the designation "women's writing" continue to serve as a productive framework, or does it risk reinforcing the very marginalization it seeks to address by positioning women outside the literary mainstream?

FEMSPEC, an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal dedicated to challenging gender through speculative means in any genre, seeks a new member to join our volunteer collective to fill the role of Website Editor and Social Media Manager

Duties include:

Updating FEMSPEC's website at the collective's request - this could include updating biographies of collective members, altering the website's layout, adding or removing content from various pages in the website, and updating the website with information about the current issue of the journal

Managing the journal's Facebook page and X account

Haryanvi Dalit theatre occupies a highly marginalised position within the broader landscape of Indian theatre. It may aptly be described as “the marginalised among the marginalised,” as it has remained largely excluded from both mainstream theatre studies and Dalit cultural historiography. Haryanvi Dalit Swang theatre was active long before the Dalit Panther Movement, but it received little attention due to its lack of publication and translation into English. This book seeks to recover, document, and critically examine the neglected legacy of Haryanvi Swang, with particular emphasis on its Dalit traditions and practitioners, thereby contributing to a more inclusive understanding of Indian theatrical heritage.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, in contemporary digital society, have drastically evolved from statistical tools to principal instruments of knowledge production, validation and dissemination. Large language models (LLMs), automated search systems, and predictive algorithms increasingly dictate what society knows, how knowledge is validated, and who is recognized as an expert/authority. This shift demands a rigorous critique from the perspective of the sociology of knowledge to evaluate how power, inequality, and social structures are embedded within these automated epistemic tools.

In her 1991 article “Scolding Brides and Bridling Scolds: Taming the Woman's Unruly Member,” Lynda Boose describes Kate’s final speech in The Taming of the Shrew as “a textual moment in which, in Althusserian terms, the play quite overtly ‘interpellates,’ or hails, its women viewers to an imaginary relationship with the ideology of the discourse being played out on stage.” This panel builds on Boose’s reading by examining texts that both assume an audience of women and interpellate the reader in a meaningful way. During a period when relatively few women were literate, texts that hail women had to find a way to reach their audience. Boose’s stage example is one way to attract women’s attention.

Inspired by Ronald Hutton’s work in “The Making of the Early Modern British Fairy Tradition” (2014), this panel explores gendered figures in early modern folklore texts. The study of early modern folklore features significant crossover: fairies may also be familiars, witches can be wise women, and fairyland could be, as Hutton explains, the “embodiment of hedonism, summed up in its characteristic activity of song and dance.” Panelists are invited to explore texts and records that capture folk traditions in early modern literature and culture. Papers are welcome to explore a wide variety of topics with questions of gender at their heart.

Plastic / Plasticity

Literature and Culture and the Material of a (Bygone?) Era

Plastic is a defining material of our era. Its properties—plasticity, durability, the ability to imitate any shape, its toxicity, and indecomposability—are also properties of contemporary culture and literature. The proposed thematic issue begins with the premise that plastic can be read simultaneously as a historical substance and as a "theory machine"—a tool for understanding cultural texts and the experience of contemporary times.

"My approach, in this paper, is one of thinking with plastic through its metaphoricity and materiality, its relationality and gestationality; in short, a material mediality.” [R. Gosh]

Appropriately for a word broadly defined as “having a mixed character,” the idea of “hybridity” has elicited contradictory interpretation since its inception in the Greek word hybris. While the word could mean miscegenation, shame, wantonness, outrage, and even violence, the term carried the alternate but equally valid connotation of thinking and moving beyond human limitations. Despite a shift fromclassical beliefs through Christianity, hybrid figures such as the centaur and satyr continued to proliferate throughout the Renaissance, evoking both wonder and terror. While sometimes considered blasphemous, these classical hybrids were also allegorized to fit into Renaissance ethical and religious frameworks.
