In Strange Natures: Futurity, Empathy, and the Queer Ecological Imagination (2013), Nicole Seymour writes, “In the past few years, queer ecology has emerged as a burgeoning area of interdisciplinary study,” (21) which traces and builds upon a host of “empathetic, ethical interrelationships between the queer and the non-human” (23). In a similar vein, Catriona Mortimer-Sandilands and Bruce Erickson state in “A Genealogy of Queer Ecologies” that “the task of a queer ecology is to probe the intersections of sex and nature with an eye to developing a sexual politics that more clearly includes considerations of the natural world and its biosocial constitution” (161).

Unlike other thinkers of that century, among whom Immanuel Kant stands for his remarkable thought, the new concepts of space and movement don’t seem to have influenced Diderot’s thinking effectively.
The Latina maid has historically been one of the signature roles Hollywood has created for Spanish-speaking and/or Latina actors in both film and television entertainment. The late Lupe Ontiveros (1942-2012), one of the most recognizable and respected contemporary Mexican-American actors, said to have played the role of the Latina maid approximately 150 times for US audiences during her career, reflecting the stereotyping that still abounds in the US popular imaginary about the female Latinx Other.

The Humanities Podcast Network (humanitiespodnetwork.org) is inviting expressions of interest for our first annual symposium on academic podcasting.
The symposium will build on the aims of the HPN to offer guidance and support to instructors, scholars, and independent creators working in the Humanities who are interested in incorporating podcasts into their classroom practice and/or making their own podcasts.
As media texts show us superheroes from around the world(s), demonstrating extraordinary abilities and living a life shaped by a moral code, how we define their iconic features and cultural impact has been the focus of much scholarly debate.
Superheroes have proliferated and multiplied in the 21st Century, coming to prominence in film, television, and video game industries the same way that their popular narratives had begun to flourish in the comic book industry some eighty years before. Yet, while all of these stories and characters are tethered to these early years of the genre, through iterative retellings, reboots, and cultural readjustments, superheroes have consistently found renewed life in modern and contemporary re-imaginings.
An ocean is not just an ecological space, but a social, economic, and cultural one. The threat of overfishing incorporates all these dimensions, yet research has not addressed overfishing equitably across geographies, species, cultures, economies or futures (especially in relation to climate change). Even rarer are studies that address the complex risks arising from overfishing in a way that transparently acknowledges uncertainties and interactions across these multiple aspects.
SEASECS will hold its 48th annual meeting, February 17-19, 2022, at the Luminary & Co Hotel and Caloosa Sound Convention Center in Ft. Myers, Florida. The theme for this year's meeting is "Oceans Rise, Empires Fall: Tidal Shifts in the Eighteenth Century.”

“Questioning the Canon: Rethinking the Golden Age of Children’s Literature”

What remains in the aftermath the overarching deconstruction theory for the fields of literary criticism and literary practice? Did the humanities find their vocation in the field of (meta)-theory and did literary practice abandon its traditional craft for good? Or does the advent of theory spell out a crisis of the humanities, and the "literature of replenishment" has been replaced by the "literature of exhaustion" (John Barth)? These are some of the questions we will try to address in the third issue of the Romanian online magazine In Spatele Blocului (www.inspateleblocului.ro), together with discerning new ways of configuring the craft of literary practice in general.
This is a call for panelists on an invited panel.
The topic of the panel is Antoine Volodine, and the theme is “the medium is the message.”
Below is a draft of the panel proposal.
The fiction of Antoine Volodine often depicts media traveling across networks and communities. Messages are destroyed after being disseminated, a la Snapchat. The low character counts of the narrats call to mind the brevity of Twitter posts. How does the literature of Volodine, across five decades (the 1980s through the 2020s), depict the rise of new media technologies? What does the treatment of media technologies in the novels of Volodine say about the current era of silos, polarizations, suspicion, censorship, and propaganda?
Proceeding from the beginning to the end of time, occurring in a ritual space, and focusing on moments of extraordinary joy, suffering, humor, and election, medieval drama maps worlds of vulnerability and interconnectedness. Its scope has continued to inspire re-enactment and adaptation from Passion Plays and the Mormon Hill Cumorah pageants to Yiimimangaliso, a South African version of the Chester mystery plays stressing truth and reconciliation, and Brandon Jacob-Jenkins’ reworking of the medieval morality play Everyman as Everybody.
We envision this seminar as an opportunity to further reflect on the changes in pedagogy and performance praxis that have germinated from the changes brought about by the global health crisis and social justice movements. As Shakespeareans working across the disciplinary lines of literary and theatre pedagogy and performance, we invite colleagues to present papers critically discussing the experience of reading, teaching, performing, and appreciating Shakespeare in text and in performance.

Practice of comics and the academic history of comics studies are often found Eurocentric. Readers often favour the traditional comics, either American or Franco-Belgian or Japanese Manga. They find the aesthetic flavour in them and most of the unorthodox graphic storytelling are left out. With Charles Hatfield’s Alternative Comics (2005), comics studies include the “other” voices and thereby the untold stories and unforeseen graphic patterns of the colonised and indigenous people are celebrated. The affiliation of comics studies with Auto/biography studies, Feminism, postcolonialism, postmodernism opens an arena for the readers/researchers of comics and graphic narratives to develop a new field of studies.

Human beings, irrespective of their socio-cultural differences, exist in co-dependence with each other as well as in terms of their relationality to the state. This necessitates the formation of different institutions of care: mutual-aids, co-operative societies, care-centres, and NGOs, which are mechanisms of state-power that both define and threaten human being’s relationship to the state. Regulations imposed upon subject-citizens by the state on a daily basis in the form of ideological inflections make the human mind precarious, while the disciplinary machineries of the state expose them to ineffable stages of biological as well as social risks.
Fidelity to the original author, long a subject of debate for viewers of film adaptations of books, encounters a particular challenge when the adapter is also an author, exerting comparable claims to creative and expressive control. This panel explores the rivalry always inherent in such a situation, as well as in film remakes where the original and the copy contend for artistic prestige. Submissions are welcome on all such contentious pairings, as well as papers asserting an implicit authorial claim for studio adaptations or authorial appropriations of narratives of uncertain origin.
