Mondo Exotica: Representing the Other in Mid-Century Americana

Submissions are requested for a special session being proposed for this fall's
Popular Culture Association in the South/American Culture Association in the
South meeting, October 5-7, in Savannah, GA. Possible topics may include, but
are not limited to, lounge music, tiki culture, burlesque, roadside
attractions, "Oriental" kitsch, cowboys and Indians, and/or space-age futurism,
with consideration of the racial/gendered/queer elements which mark the mid-
century American fascination with the Other. Any topic related to this theme
will be considered, with a focus on the 1940s-1960s.

suggestion: What specific discursive features of
reading, writing, speaking, listening, and/or silence
contribute to representations of identities? With what

Meridian is a literary review that acts as a forum for scholarship and
debate on the cultural, social, psychological and historical dynamics of
creativity in all its forms. It seeks articles that explore the processes of
imagination that enable the creative evolution of texts, stories, art and
ideas. From literary studies to social sciences, image and text, literary
fiction and non-fiction, interviews and reviews, Meridian is an
interdisciplinary review for writers, scholars and artists of the history
and practice of the creative arts. Submissions are considered on a

postamble is a peer-reviewed postgraduate journal published bi-annually
online. Based in the Centre for African Studies, this innovative new
publication is committed to original postgraduate student work focused
on the multi-disciplinary study of Africa.

Submissions cover a wide range of humanities, arts and social science
topics focusing on the study of Africa. This online publication will
allow for the exploration of alternative forms of academic research
presentation that may include creative writing, visual essays, or, the
use of digital film and sound.

SFSU Cinema Studies Graduate Association Conference
  "SPACES OF CONFLICT"
  In the aim of expanding the dialogue around cinema, we are interested in exploring critical approaches to film that push beyond narrative and character-centric methods, specifically those addressing issues of space within and without the film frame.
   
  The intent of this conference is to focus on how space is investigated, portrayed or enacted in cinema with an attention to the relationship between space and conflict. Some possible areas of discussion could include (but are not limited to):
  ê Geographic conflict zones (cultural, political, environmental)
  ê Rural/urban space (e.g., film noir, musicals, etc.)
